I suspect it is tied in with some type of bots targeting virtually all substantive, online, non "progressive" sites.
I started to notice this anout 2 years ago, or so, on several sites that I follow which somewhat surprisingly, somewhat suddenly started to have many commenters using similar phrasing, minimal logic, highly insulting replies to other commenters.
The big 'tell' - to me - that something was awry was the sheer volume of the responses coupled with the ultra brief time frame between comments.
That is, an individual poster may make 20 to 30 comments with only 2 minutes between postings.
I agree, so go the next step and wonder who has the wherewithal and the motivation to overturn this apple(hint)cart? and googs and twatter and.... They are trying to avoid being regulated.
