In fact this is encoded in the trajectory of Exodus - YHWH through Moses defeating and humiliating the Egyptian deities, then releases his people from the bondage of slavery, then constitutes for himself a collection of tribes with a priestly cult administering the spiritual benefits of heaven. Read the exhortations in the narrative once the Israelites are in the wilderness and on their way to the land of promise - They have been redeemed from slavery to the old gods, therefore their primary objective is to not harden their hearts to the call of faith in God's sure promises of final salvation. Only our own wicked, unbelieving hearts would be to blame for the seeming disconnect and dissonance with God. Not metaphysical and irresistable demon charms over the masses.

Interesting. Sadly, I'm not as well versed in the OT so I'll have to study on that.
