I wasn't. I heard a lady call into Sebastian Gorka's new talk show today who said that in Santa Clara County in Ca, there are approximately 33,000 of them raising their grandchildren. Cause? Her daughter found drugs at 13 and never recovered.
This situation can now be extended to the opioid crisis. Same effect. Who cares for the kids? Grandparents.
Hey Nancy you waste of a human skeleton, **BUILD THE DAMN WALL.

Good article. Here's a snippet below.

*Since the mid-1990s, several social conditions have caused the number of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren to increase.
Addiction and incarceration, child abuse and neglect, and economic factors all have contributed to a rise in the number of custodial grandparents. A recent Pew Trusts report documents how the current opioid epidemic is contributing to this trend. According to the CDC, drug overdose deaths in the United States have more than tripled from 1999 to 2015, and often leave children parentless.
The number of children placed in foster care has sharply increased, partially fueled by opioid and other drug use. When children are removed from their birth parents, federal law requires that state child protective services give preference to placement with relatives who, more often than not, are the grandparents.
Additionally, increased incarceration rates for women have changed family life. In the 1990s, female incarceration rates skyrocketed compared to the rate for fathers. Incarceration, addiction and neglect are often interconnected.

This has been going on for a long time...it is sad. Personally know children being raised by grandpaprents. One may turn out okay, the other turned out exactly like her mother. It is a hard situation and both cases were related to drug abuse.

Its bigger than just the Drugs the parents of these kids are uneducated unable to raise the children because of the lack of morals have no sense of responsibility no skill set and the drugs on top of that. Our prisons are full of these parents and the only thing left for the children is to be raised by grandparents on fixed incomes. oh and there seems to be an epidemic of drug induced schizophrenia.

Yeah.... think about this,,, what percentage of retired adults have adult children living in their homes? I cant tell you for sure but its a lot more than you think. What percentage of working age adults are not in the work force or seeking employment? I can tell you that its the highest its ever been. Something is not right with the economy.

Excessive immigration has made for a surplus of workers, therefore wages are suppressed. Add the Obama economy we are still recovering from and this is the results. Adding jobs and removing illegal immigrants will open up the job market and increase wages. Supply and demand.

Have to disagree with u on the economy. Check the stats - lowest unemployment for whites (3.6%), blacks (5.6%) and Latinos (4.7%). The numbers may have shifted since I last checked but you get the point. More people are working in todays economy than have since 1979.

I need to see the species stats. Niggers are nearly 100% parentless.

We have to remember we live in a real multicultural society. In some cultures in the USA it is the norm to have children early, and then leave the raising of the children to the older generation as the parents go on to enjoy their social life until they "hit the wall" or age out, then they in turn become the older generation watching over the grandchildren. It only draws our attention because the parents give up their parental rights so the grandparents can apply for foster care funding and other social services.

I was a Medicaid worker for the state of Texas for 6 years. I significant number of clients in my assigned caseload had custody of their grandchildren. That was in the late 1990's. The other trend I noticed in my caseload was families that had abandoned Cali moved to Texas. If you're moving from one state that is generous with benefits, your only choice is to find the next most generous state to give you food and stuff. Sad pattern.
