I remember a while back, when China got a contract to mine in Afghanistan. It seemed like an area under US control. I remember talking with some friends whether this was like collateral. US secures mining operation for Chinese state run company as collateral for continuing loan?

Don't think so because of the 1872 Mining Act, which is a real gem. Anyone can mine in America for next to no money. they can go anywhere in the US and if they can prove a claim, they pay like five bucks an acre and post no bond, leave superfund sites, and post no bond. I did a ton of research on this because I grew up in a ruined mining town. This is something no one addresses ever. China and Canada have mined in the US and left some of the biggest superfund sites in their wake.

Nothing would surprise me. Sadly, all these controllers seem to work together.
