So here's my 2 cents.... For a long long long time I've been defending Gowdy. He's said a few things on FOX that did make me scratch my head, however, in the run up to the 16 election (the first I actually voted in, at 46,) I spent countless hours doing my research... (like literally to the point where my wife was getting concerned I was spending too much time on the internet...) and during that research, I ran across a youtube vid of Gowdy eviscerating the press after Benghazi. So I watched a couple dozen of the videos of him on CSPAN, during which many he eviscerated someone else, or asked some questions I really appreciated. So I've long been of the opinion, that while he may not be a "white hat," he is a good guy, who knows right from wrong, and cares more about the truth, than the politics.
Should he end up getting the nod from Trump, and choose to accept, then many of those FOX bits will make it very hard for any Dems in Congress to question his integrity, or his loyalty. So some of those less than damning bits may have been very carefully worded for just that reason. I know he's a brilliant lawyer, and justice is his thing, so I am reservedly hopeful that he is part of the plan...
