Does anyone remember when coding was about coding?

It still is. But GitHub is no longer about coding.

I am from a time when code actually worked.

We call that "Pre-Diversity".

They would call it "evil white cis male scum"

My code never worked so I'm not sure when this was.

The proof will be in the pudding: Code that works.

But my immediate advice to developers: migrate your code to other sites before these tools cripple your project.

I plan to, I'm debating switching to Atom from Github or sticking with sublime. Its sad to see what has happened to Github.

Use Atom and BitBucket. Or, if you're a Mac guy, use Mac Vim for your editor. Vim is ultra nice. Never touch your mouse again.

But naw, fuck github. Buncha racist bastards.

I wonder when we'll see Github do a SourceForge and take control of pages for projects that have migrated. Their URL naming structure makes this harder, but they could work around this with a redirect (which they'll justify because 'harassment').

What are anti-harassment tools, and how will they impact projects on the site, specifically?

What planet do these hambeasts orbit on which developers actually have a harassment problem? They're inventing a job because they're entirely useless at everything real.

I don't care what gender a person is or believes themselves to be. If they're a Mines of Moria Dwarf-identifying hermaphroditic Balrog-kin, but submit a ton of patches and are easy to work with, then I don't give even half of a fuck about their issues. It's not that code should be a meritocracy, code IS a meritocracy. Anyone pretending otherwise has bigger issues than how they see their genitalia and secondary sexual characteristics.

Their contention is that their appearance IS their actual gender (twig and berries notwithstanding). If they just wore slacks and opted for a crew cut, THEN they'd be wearing a disguise. That's like if I told people that I feel in my heart that I really am Green Lantern and how dare you criticize my power ring.

I work on a dev team. I get badass code and the team hits deadlines. This includes females, and males of multiple races. I can't think of a single time where I didn't absolutely trust the code provided by female developers. But the thing is, if you have a good team, race and gender don't matter.

See that's the thing, though. That's in real life, where you all know each other in person and see each other on a (nearly) daily basis.

On the internet, you have none of those, so merit is (and rightly should be) the only judge, but some people can't stand the idea that their religion/sex/gender/whatever doesn't make a difference on the internet, so they've invented the issue of "harassment" in code/coding projects where it really didn't (and to a large degree, still doesn't) exist - or at least, not intentionally.

Code like this:

while (it = thing.next()) {
  map.put(it,'in');
}

used to just be written off as a joke. Now, though, people see code like that and scream "I'm being harassed" and demand that it be taken out. Some of the more unreasonable ones even demand that whoever put that code in, whether it was intentional or not, be removed from the project permanently. They don't care who that other person is, or even if they were the person that created the project. They just want to quash the meritocracy of code and the internet of things.

Big companies want a placid environment in which to conduct business. As little boat-rocking as possible. "Just give them the money in the register, it's not worth the trouble. Just settle with the plaintiff, it's not worth the bad PR." A vexatious and devoted minority can wheedle basically anything they want out of a big institution, and with greater ease than if they'd gone after smaller fish.

For this much influence, I'm 100% sure Michael obama is a dude, I don't even need to see his dick.

This is the second time I'm hearing this theory. Since black women are naturally more masculine than women of other ethnicities, are we sure this isn't just a perception issue? What evidence is out there?

You know, I'd almost believe transgendered folks if they all didn't look like the 'this is my final option to get attention because no one wanted to fuck me' type.

That and the fact that they all need to tell people they're trans. If you actually thought you were meant to be a woman and weren't just seeking attention, wouldn't you just say you were a woman and be done with it?

I have no idea if I should use "him" or "her" because I have no idea if this is a man pretending to be a woman or woman pretending to be a man.

I suppose I'll stick with "it"
