I think a lot of people use Chrome just because it's a Google thing, and so many people use Google as their search engine, so they see the ads/messages for it
I switched over to Chrome sometime around 2009, because it seemed faster than Firefox on my netbook. I ended up switching back to Firefox shortly after though, because I experienced too many small problems with Chrome. I don't really remember what they were exactly, but I remember something about Ctrl+F not working as well as it did on Firefox, and crashed fairly often.
