Yup. Largest voluntary DNA database in the world. Who really thought it would not be subpoenaed?

I just assumed these were a honeypot to begin with.

I didn't actually assume that, but I am surprised the cops don't already have access to the DNA. I've always viewed the ancestry sites to be the perfect target for getting extremely personal information on people.

Exactly. This information is on the cheap, and taxpayers can easily cover for this for privileged view.

That's the main reason I never ended up doing a 23andMe, which sucks because I'd love to be able to look through the data in my DNA.

I'd love it if a company made a do-it-yourself test, a completely self contained unit you can use at home, but that's a far off pipe-dream. I don't even think shit like Dropcam lets you use their software on your own dedicated server.

You could use electrophoresis. Not hard to make a setup. We did it in high school. You would probably have to get a lab to do PCR to your sample to do that though.

Our government is out of fucking control.

You smile and nod while your country destroys countries around the world and you think once they get a taste of that power they are not gonna turn around and fuck you in the ass as well. You deserve your government.

Lol yeah because the US is the only one out there committing atrocities.
Oh wait, that's literally every government in the world. Nobody deserves this bullshit.

Well that's a wild generalization. Maybe some of us don't like the government doing that shit either. Ever here of the Vietnam protests?

Next it will be insurance companies, to decide how much you will have to pay for your health insurance coverage.

Why shouldn't health risk factors be included in premium calculations?

Like do you seriously not see how that could be used in a way that would be a literal blank check to get rid of huge portions of the population by saying say, oh you have a history of speaking out against the government well we know we don't want your blood line around your healthcare cost is 95% of your income and same for everyone your related. Determining things that can result in people living and dieing can never be based on how you are born, if you give any small group that power it's writing your own species death warrant.

I see no problem there. I shouldn't have to subsidize the lap band procedure for some fatass who doesn't know portion control

Portion control has nothing to do with your dna you dumb fuckwit.

a false positive rate of 0.5% in a country like America with 2.5 million incarcerated prisoners ~ 12500 innocent people,"proven guilty" with statistics.

Impressive that almost 1% of the population is in prison, but they didn't all get there because of dna evidence.

I really dont get the attitude "I got nothing to hide". They are watching your every move and its enough for you to type on the internet something "wrong" and piss off the wrong politician. Next thing you know they are planting CP through the back door on your phone or through microsoft new spy windows on your PC without you knowing. You are arrested, they "find" CP or some secret gov document on your device, secret court convicts you without anyone knowing about it and you are sent to a secret torture prison never to be seen again.

Remember those old totalitarian movies about big bad communists where they scare you if you say something wrong neighbor might hear you and report you to the authorities. Yea... you are living it, 100 times worst.

They should destroy any information once it's delivered to their customers.

They probably see all that data as a huge potential asset going forward as they might be able to sell it anonymized for people to do studies and such. They probably already do have deals with the medical industry for some of it.

[–] thrus 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

I would expect part of the deal you sign to allow them to own the results entirely they are just allowing you to see them.

There is this absurd notion that if you voluntarily give your private data to whatever company then you are pretty much renouncing to your privacy and constitutional rights and cops can do whatever they want with said data including collecting them for "future reference" in a short of pre-crime fashion...

We are more and more depending on technology that gives out tons of our most sensitive data to trusted people and this is pretty much what the future looks like... but I don't remember once to have agreed to renounce to my privacy and constitutional rights for this... so we either stand against these horrible abuses by criminals who pretend to work for the good of society or we are preparing a very ugly future to our kids.
