It's madness. I ended up doing a fresh install of XP the other week so I could go back to some of the classic games that were a pain to get going under Win7. I'm not installing updates on 7 any more because I can't be bothered to try and pick out the shit from the useful bits when I know I'll be fighting a losing battle.

I cannot see a way of upgrading past Win7 at all, aside from abandoning Windows wholesale. I hope WINE doesn't suck.

All you really need to do is install GWX control panel in windows 7.

You know windows 7 has an xp compatibilty mode right? lol there is no reason to be using xp in 2016.

Yeah, I've tried the XP compatibility mode before. Sometimes I could get things to work just fine, other times not so much. Maybe it's better now, but generally I don't care about using outdated OSes as long as I get what I wanted and I'm not putting them on the net.

I'll have to get GWX installed at some point, thanks for the pointer.
