It's madness. I ended up doing a fresh install of XP the other week so I could go back to some of the classic games that were a pain to get going under Win7. I'm not installing updates on 7 any more because I can't be bothered to try and pick out the shit from the useful bits when I know I'll be fighting a losing battle.
I cannot see a way of upgrading past Win7 at all, aside from abandoning Windows wholesale. I hope WINE doesn't suck.

All you really need to do is install GWX control panel in windows 7.
You know windows 7 has an xp compatibilty mode right? lol there is no reason to be using xp in 2016.

It is very obvious, everyone that they could trick into upgrading did. All others were resistant enough.
The crazy thing is that the very people that got tricked into upgrading are the very people Microsoft does not want. These are the people that does not want to pay monthly subscriptions prices. These are the people that does not want to software as a service. These are also the very people that will jump to an other OS when Windows becomes subscription.
The people Microsoft wants are Enterprises, people with big money. However they pissed off every single IT person with their privacy invasion. You can't deny it, Windows 10 is one giant security risk for an enterprise. They do not show any respect for their customers, why should an enterprise trust Microsoft if they act like spoiled brats that can do anything they want?

They played it clever though. They got everyone to be totally dependant on windows 10, with the free model. In a few months time the free year will run out and I damn bet everyone will pay for it because they've got all their system set up, all comfortable with their OS. It was a horribly calculated move. Like, disgusting. It's the drug dealer model. You give them a free taste, and further fixes cost extra, only after though they've become dependant on it.
TIL Microsoft are basically philosophical drug dealers.

According to netmarketshare the adoption rate is pretty poor, It's actually looking like people are either switching to another OS or are just refusing to upgrade to 10.
