That's great, but no matter what, no law is going to stop me from doing what I'm already doing now. If I paid for it, I'm going to do whatever I damn well please to it.

The only thing that the company should be able to do is void your warranty and cut you off from any value-added stuff that's given to customers later on.

I am sure John Deere owners will be pleased.

If you've never had to get the dealership to come fix a tractor in the middle of Buttfuck Montana, then you'll never know how pleased they are.

Is it named after what those cowboys did? Seems odd to name an entire area over that one night that you'd think they wouldn't want mentioned.

When's the appeal?

Some people enjoy tinkering with cars. This ruling allows them to do it without fear of prosecution.

The appeal to the case. Not the appeal of owning your own software in an item.

Auto makers claiming copyright is all about forcing you to go to the dealer for maintenance and repairs, no matter how overpriced they are.

So what happens when some jackass fucks with the firmware on his self driving car so it responds quicker, but then it runs somebody over? People have already said that googles cars drive like grandma. This is one of the few times i wouldn't want someone having the freedom to jailbreak thier consumer item. I hope tesla & Google can keep these people out... Maybe if it's all done over the air with no usb or physical way to access the mainboards, they can keep a tight encryption going. Sorry for being anti freedom, i just wouldn't want a bunch of people who don't really know what they're doing fucking with control systems of heavy machinery.

Isn't it this way already?

Then they have liability. That's the way the system is supposed to work. You can do what you want but are liable for if it goes wrong.

I agree with your theory, the solution as I see it is having the cars do a validation check from one area to another and have each check everything it talks with so that you have many many areas checking each other, seems overkill but would mean modifying almost everything in order to do anything. At that point is is not a simple change but a full on rewrite, much more work to do and few are going to want the risk of posting their rewrite for others to use.
