I've been using ddg for about a year, maybe 2. For most of my searches, it works no problem. Sometimes I will still use Google, by adding g! To the search term.

switched about a year ago and have basically not even noticed a difference. i actually forgot and surprised myself a few times.

DDG should be everyone's default.

Thanks for letting me know about such an awesome feature! Seems like Voat is integrated as well, you can use !subverse and !voat.

You can use sp! when you want to still not be tracked and have the Google precision.

I tried to use them. They just are not that good. Not sure what their algorithm is, but it needs tweaking.

Broad questions work great for me. However when it becomes very technical (for me error code foo in foo software) I'm forced to go use startpage.com.

Anything deeper than someone famous just won't turn up. I can't even google my very specific last name there and get any relevant results.

Yep, using their search is pretty terrible.

My understanding is that they're still tracking you and tying you back to Google behind the scenes. Maybe a more knowledgeable Voater will reply here with details. I didn't care to look into them because I decided their search results were garbage.

Try using Startpage. It's basically a proxy for using google. Google can't track you but you can still use google.

If you try using it like google, you will generally have a bad time. I find that if I include a few more key words, it returns the results I am after.

Tracking people doesn't work very well anyway, the ads you get are for a router or whatever because YOU JUST BOUGHT ONE LAST MONTH!

Sometimes ads are there to make you feel good about your purchase. A lot of luxury brands, for instance, design ads to increase customer loyalty rather than acquire new customers.

And at the end of the day, the advertiser doesn't care that you already bought their shit because it costs them $0.01 to show you their ad.

They can aggregate that data. The things you search for at what times from where, how you spell and what words you use, your browser and OS, etc. are a pretty good fingerprint (I imagine, I don't know if they actually do that).

The browser alone gives enough information to give a pretty good fingerprint on most people. It reports information about plugins, installed fonts, all sorts of stuff, to any server that asks. You can install plugins to refuse those requests, but then that becomes a data point of its own.

It's also a myth that you can find what you're looking for when using DDG.

I use startpage usually. Works just fine.

But it does make your service better.

Too lazy to search for the thread (It's in Voat IIRC), a goat mentioned a search he was doing had better results on startpage than google. Startpage being Google search without the tracking, essentially.

In this discussion: "I used DDG before it was cool, it's far better than everything else you're just all using it wrong."

All the search engines do things differently and they all have their place. I use StartPage and DDG when I'm using Tor, I use Google for text searches (mostly related to programming things) and Bing for most images (I just like their image search layout better). I use Yahoo when I want to feel like I'm stuck in the 90's while I make dial-up sounds.

Switching my default right now. Meant to do this a while back.
