So it's less portable than laptop, less powerful than an equally priced PC, more expensive than equally powerful PC...

But you can play while you poop.

Yes, but much more portable than lugging a PC around. Also, laptops are designed for travel (I don't trust my all those heavy graphics card and tall CPU cooler tower to handle the bumps of travel well on my motherboard). So, a gaming laptop would be handy if you'd have to spend a couple of weeks at the in-laws and need to get that gaming in.

Its like youve never seen a gaming laptop before in your entire life. Those exact bullet points apply to literally every gaming laptop ever made.

Makes sense to me. Hardcore gaming at home, casual gaming on the road. Best of both worlds.

A mITX build would be more convenient than this thing

A laptop is a portable computer. A gaming laptop is heavy, hot, it has a short battery lifespan it is somewhat portable. You can take it with you at college and play some games in your room. But this "thing" it's a monster, and I don't think that's a good word in this case. A mini PC (but big enough to fit in a decent graphic card) it's a better option. It would stay on your desk anyway. You may move it several times a year, so a small PC case with a monitor, keyboard and a mouse (which you also need for your laptop too) won't bother you too much.

I see this all the time at airports. Some dude is at the gate with a 9 pound, 17" gaming laptop. Like is it really worth it? I guess so.

A gaming laptop is whatever you buy. A 960m + dual core i7 + 14" screen is not big, nor heavy, and most have similar battery lives to their ultralight counterparts these days. The Razer Blade, for example, rock a quad core, 970m, weighs 4 lbs (right in line with most budget thin-n-lights) and has a 5hr battery life with the 3k touch screen. Arguably longer with the 1080P screen. Sorry, but what you say largely isn't true in today's market. Do some tend to run hot? Yep. There are tradeoffs everywhere. If you don't mind a slight bit of additional weight size, Alienware 13's weigh about the same, and have a freaking 8 hour battery on them. Alienware also tends to have much better cooling.

And I personally find it entertaining that you attribute "hot" to gaming machines, when the hottest machines I ever owned were all thin and light mass-market machines from HP and the like.

I forgot to mention, what I said was my thought when the first gaming laptops came out. But still, for $2000 (Blade price) you can get a mini PC + peripherals + $750-1000 to spare. And you can take it with you when you go to college or whatever. I can't find other point than that. If you go to vacation, I'm pretty sure that you don't need any gaming laptop, so it would stay on your desk anyways.

Also, I find it entertaining that you compare a ordinary HP laptop to a $2000 laptop.

This machine somehow looks worse than I imagined.

I've recently browsed for a new laptop as mine is getting old and it is baffling how all of them have a i7 for no good reason at all. Some don't even have much ram and no GPU and still rock a i7. Not sure what you'd do with it but just the fact it's slapped on it seems to sell.

Sadly, I think any improvements will amount to polishing a turd. The only reason I splurged on a gaming laptop is because I love being able to throw it into my backpack, but it's still heavy. I can't imagine adding water weight to that.

It's like this.

You get two backpacks.
