After years of staying with Microsoft I'm finally permanently moving to Linux. I've always had a Linux partition to play around with so I at least know what to expect out of it.

As Unity3D got a Linux version yesterday, I finally threw out Microsoft from my life.

I've done that before a couple of times, though. Once I came back for games. Then I came back for Unity.

My phone is ringing off the hook from all the family I put on W7 over the years and who followed the pop-up "upgrade" instructions. None of their computers work, they can't find anything, they're just stuck.

I have no idea how to legitimately downgrade them, so I'm shelling out $20/pop for fresh W7 licenses, backing up their data, reinstalling them completely, putting their data back, and running the anti-W10 upgrade/telemetry script floating around out there. I hope to hell MS recognizes that some of us CAN'T upgrade our elderly and computer illiterate family to W10 anytime MS feels like it.

Oh I know. Late-night panicked phone call...

"Windows isn't working!"

After discussion, start to understand the problem is that the toolbar in Word is missing.

Have to cast such a broad net with questions to work towards an accurate answer.

Fuck Microsoft and fuck Bill Gates. That's all everyone needs to know ever since his Open Letter to the Homebrew Computer Club back in 76. He was an asshole then and remains one to this day,

Bill Gates it's just a 'technology advisor' in Microsoft since 2014.

I'm really hoping that Linux continues to build on it's game support. Linux has been making steady progress in virtually every field that people have complained about over the last 6 years that I've observed. People used to say there were no video editors, and now we have programs like Kdenlive which is plenty for basic to intermediate work as well as Lightworks for more high-end editing. Blender has also always been a constant.

I'm hoping that gaming continues that trend, especially with the development of Vulkan. The Unreal engine port as well as the more recent one (I've honestly forgotten which) is also showing that there will be more compatibility of games between Windows/Linux.

Fingers crossed, because then I can finally stop using Windows altogether. I use Arch at work and Mint at home, pretty much the only reason I ever go into Win7 now is to play GTAV.

Microsoft is PUSHING the tech savvy away from Windows. It's an insane mistake. All they had to do was make Windows 7 SP2, add Directx12, put apps optional on the side in a window, and call it a day, and there wouldn't be this hysteria. On the positive side, I think this whole privacy and transparency issue is being magnified by Windows 10 and it will help keep Linux distributions from heading in that direction. This is a valuable conversation happening in computing.

Yeah, if they didn't push all this spyware I'd still be running Windows. I was already fairly anxious over the "free" upgrade likely meaning shenanigans, their efforts to prevent people from disabling tracking since that release have just made MS untenable. TBH, the only thing they really needed to do was integrate mobile style apps with the traditional desktop application environment without any silly mode switching. It amazes me that they managed to screw up this badly. I'm used to MS blunders, but damn. Finally pulled two bad major OS releases in a row.

Definitely. I'm glad to see the Linux population growing.

I'm also hoping that more people will start to understand that Linux isn't this ultra-geeky, confusing, or hard to use system that's impossible to use unless you're a computer scientist or something like that. Distributions like Mint and *Ubuntu are incredibly easy to install maintain.

Once people realize that, coupled with the fact that everything is free, I'm hoping we may start to see Linux appear more often even with very casual users.

Agreed. I'm a software engineer and have already started migrating my personal machines to Linux. That, and I've started recoding many of my apps off the .NET framework to node.js, etc. (Sure, .NET core is pretty snazzy, but I have such contempt for Microsoft right now...)

A friend of mine works in a development startup that does Java. Apparently only one person in the entire place uses Windows.

I was hesitant to upgrade to 10 due to the fact that I run nvidia surround. So I rolled the dice and now I'm super annoyed. 3 screen surround display is weird as fuck. Nothing lines up properly, my taksbar or whatever you call it bounces from screen to screen whenever it wants. Cant tab out of games because I then loose the taskbar. Fucking annoying. None of this is game breaking of course but still frustrating. All the googling I did just comes back with people complaining that it's still broken. Wish I could just go back

Not that I want it anyways, but at this point I will never upgrade to Windows 10 based on principle. On top of all this shit the fact they they are pushing OS-exclusive gaming is a massive fucking insult to the consumer.

Fuck you Microsoft.

Microsoft is a day late and a dollar short. In the mainstream media they act like Windows 10 is doing great, but it's only because they basically clickbaited the hell out of it to Windows 7 and Windows 8 users, and it's "free".

I had to download Windows 8.1 and reinstall after I had a boot error.
