You think Linux is safe? Think again. OpenBSD should be reasonably secure, but not against NSA. Nothing is completely secure. To keep NSA from listening in and tracking is pretty much undoable. It CAN be done but it's not worth the hassle unless you're into some serious shit. And by hassle I mean serious hassle. Like never using your secret computer at home, never bringing your or any cellphone with you when you use TOR/tails over some public/hacked private WIFI somewhere no way near your home, wearing a cap and make sure you don't look up into the cameras. You should also rip out the harddrive and boot from a DVD. You can only use the same WIFI once. Randomize locations. NEVER log in anywhere. You should also maintain a "normal" online presence as well to not arouse suspicion by suddenly changing your habits. This is just for starters. It's actually even more complicated than that, but you get the drift. Sound fun?

Yah, sort of. You can spoof the MAC so no real need to toss the NIC / comp. It's a necessary risk to take. And stealing laptops and pawning them is a big no-no. Too much risk, maintain low profile. How many pawnshops are there to switch between? Also, you need to really pulverize the comp when you're done with it. Nothing can survive. It's harder than you'd think. Even buying a new laptop every week or so will raise flags, so switch maybe every 3-6 months. Otherwise, good comment on the tech side. As I said, there is more.
Also: You cannot slip up. Not once. You have to follow the rules at all time, no deviations. In short - don't even start with this unless you really are a spy/terrorist/druglord-level player. No point in going through all this shit for pretty much anything less. You can do some of it to make 'em work for it. How much is up to you.
Disclaimer - I don't do pretty much any of this. I researched what it would take, and found it a bit much. Sad state when this is what you have to go through for privacy.
As /u/WildThingSammiT said - it is probably easier to just become Amish.
