At what point can we move past warfare though? At this point, we as a species have the intellectual capacity to achieve great things, I don't think squabbling over (at this point callous reasons) merits any more killing. I understand some parties harbor more blood lust than others, but the buck must eventually stop somewhere...

There is still a monster in every man. An ape ready to lash out with all his might and fury when he feels his family or tribe is threatened. The reasoning neocortex sits on top of our primitive, emotional brain. It takes a great deal of discipline to keep the ape inside. War has always played upon the ape in men.

It makes sense to fight when your life is directly threatened, but now a days people join a military branch due to the benefits garnered once they come out the other end (sometimes in not so good shape mentally/physically). I don't buy that most people serve to "protect" since there's not much to protect from. Our biggest threats come in the form of revenge third world citizens wish to enact thanks our past decisions (atrocities). The war machine is in full swing though, hopefully it hasn't gained so much momentum that it can't be stopped before it possibly destroys the humanity we have left.
