You want to be the focus of an FBI witch hunt?

Hahaha, no, you don't. I did work with him in the 90s --- he's the most obnoxious, annoying person you'll ever meet. A self-centered slow thinker, arrogant and uneducated with a fondness for everything from shady deals to outright fraud. I've talked to former acquaintances who later visited him while he was in jail and even at that time he must have acted completely delusional.

If think twice about that - he was accused of underpaying and abusing his personal staff at his mansion. The man is mainly concerned about rehabilitating his public image, in my view - it's taken a beating in NZ even by former political allies.

So...how and why did he let that happen? It was my understanding that he built mega, yes? So why did he let it get purchased in such manners?

I will create a Mega competitor that is completely open source and non-profit, similar to the Wikipedia model. I want to give everyone free, unlimited and encrypted cloud storage with the help of donations from the community to keep things going.

I will support this in every way I can. We need this.

I'll take this opportunity to share some file hosting services that I personally like:

up1.ca: Introduced right here on Voat.

Teknik Upload: Found this on lainchan.

img.bi: My favorite image uploader. Don't know where I found this.

edit:

0x0.st: Also found on lainchan.

edit2:

1339.cf: Found on 8chan.

Whoa, I really like up1.ca. Also cause the text upload feature too.

[–] Spiritreader 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago  (edited ago)

The reason I don't wanted to switch from Imgur was not being able to copy paste images (imgur could do that via Hyperdesktop). Up1.ca natively supports copy&paste so I can paste my screenshots directly from anywhere including the snipping tool. That's awesome!

If I post images to voat I try to use veuwer though, because it's direct linking feature is working better and is easier accessible imo.

I know out there are many programs that manage screenshot auto upload, but I prefer having something very lightweight.

At first I was really stubborn concerning switching image hosts, but now I use imgur less and less, the same as I use reddit less and less, and the same as I take the mega takeover as an alarm again that you cannot trust anything for very long.

Edit: spelling

up1.ca is pretty much the only place I upload directly typed text to for now. I'm aware of hastebin.com, ghostbin.com, and justpaste.it, but they have trackers.

God I love this man. Can't wait to see what he unveils this time. I've been using mega since launch and this is news to me. Will no longer be using it.

Damn, thanks for the heads up. I never use Mega except to download ROMs for my phone but I would have definitely considered them for the transfer of large files if I ever had to do that. It's crazy to think that some Chinese investor took it over.

Oh yeah very valid point. Thankfully I do that every time anyway (I would hate to brick my phone). I'm definitely not going to be using mega any more regardless.

It may have been a loop hole in the contract. He can't come forward with it, but if someone asks, he is free to say what he said. It's very unlikely, but I've seen weirder things happen in the world.

This reply should be higher up, because it's a pretty shitty thing to do. From Kims words, it really seems that it's been compromised for quite some time now. I'm very glad I chose not to trust that solution now. I suppose all those people that told everyone to not trust this guy were right in the end. I'm definitely not going to use any of his future products now.

Oh, wonderful. Seems like nothing is safe. I'd get my own NAS and host everything at home, but then that will probably have some back door worked into it.... sigh.

[–] ninjai 1 points 28 points (+29|-1) ago  (edited ago)

I did this.

I spent about $2,000. I went with FreeNAS and 6 3 TB drives in RAIDZ2 to give me a total of 10.7 TB of usable storage. I set up OwnCloud (think open source/free Mega/Dropbox/etc), SickRage (automatic TV show downloading), Couchpotato (automatic movie downloading), a DNS jail (for DNS on my LAN), a Mediawiki jail (for home wiki), a Plex jail (to serve my media), a transmission jail (to do the torrenting), and a Unifi Controller jail (to manage my soon to be multiple access points). I couldn't be happier.

So my desktops all use Veeam Endpoint to do image level backups (for free) to my NAS.

Next piece in the pie is some external hard drives to back up the NAS.

The NAS itself has an i3 powerful enough to transcode 2 1080p streams at once. Most of my stuff is 720p though, so even better.

It's got 16 GB of ECC RAM, and the disks I used are WD REDs. Supermicro motherboard.

So all my software on that thing, other than Plex, is open source. Also everything is in its own jail so it can't access other areas of the NAS.

On top of that I have a router with open sourced OS where I do some firewalling and stuff for added security. I also have a managed switch.

Good enough for me.

Goddamn. Did you use a guide to get all of this going or just winged it?

I would absolutely love to set something like this up but know I could never do it without something holding my hand atleast some of the way. Just know that your setup is envied.

You failed at i3, as intel chips have that interesting hardware backdoor.

This is the kind of post of why we need Voat bucks or something. Very interesting reply. I'll have to poke around with all those programs.

You'd basically have to build and program everything you need from scratch in order to ever be truly 100% sure. Not even open source code has 100% confidence because there's no way to verify that the code that they say is the source code is actually the code being executed on the server.

That said, I think open source is trustworthy enough. Being crazy enough to do all that stuff yourself is tinfoil hat wearing even by 2015 standards. I think the upcoming Mega competitor is something to look forward to.

Well if you compile and are hosting the code yourself, then you can be sure.

[–] TiagoTiago 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

Why would you be able to code better than multiple people working together? Coding from scratch, specially when it comes to crypto, can only guarantee there won't be intentional backdoors, but it can't prevent security holes.
