These security researchers could have made billions of dollars, and most likely got away with it, had they not released info regarding these hacks.

Yes, actually, because that's precisely what he ended up doing. Its why he's hiding out in Russia, and has only released information that is damning to the west.

Whatever he was before he left the states, he is now an FSB asset, to be utilized by the Russian state department against American interests.

It doesn't excuse what our government did, but giving state secrets to the enemy, from the safety of the enemy's home is an entirely different matter altogether.

Only if your sole motivation is money. You will find that researchers tend to value money less than others. If they didn't, they would use their intelligence to be lawyers.
