I'm guessing he signed a contract to that effect. Certain entertainment studios in the US have similar agreements. I believe Disney (not positive but pretty sure) has it in the contract that artists who work for them can be on vacation in a bar in a third world country and if they draw a happy face on a napkin it belongs to Disney.
At first glance I would agree with you but think about it...
A company is paying you to produce a product that they can sell. If you weren't producing anything why would they pay you?
You and some co-workers become jaded and decide to start your own company but you did this on company time. You were being paid to form a competitive company. Of course your employer who probably taught you some 'tricks of the trade' is going to want to protect their investment. Their requirements for their staff is extreme but you didn't have to sign the contract. You knew what you were getting yourself into when you were hired. The company did nothing wrong. You didn't have to sign your talent away but you made a conscious decision to do so. You did this to yourself. Why didn't you decline the job and the contract and suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and start a competing company on your own? Because you needed the money. Their money. And you deceived them.

That sounds to me like a contract to sell your soul more than anything else... "We own you and anything you make" basically. What utter horseshit.
