Rambler claims that because NGINX was created while he was working for the company, they have full ownership of the NGINX web server code. What kind of backwards logic is that? How the hell does Russian law even work?
I'm guessing he signed a contract to that effect. Certain entertainment studios in the US have similar agreements. I believe Disney (not positive but pretty sure) has it in the contract that artists who work for them can be on vacation in a bar in a third world country and if they draw a happy face on a napkin it belongs to Disney.

This is a common practice in the western world. It's not always enforced, but it's in a lot of contracts.

That sounds to me like a contract to sell your soul more than anything else... "We own you and anything you make" basically. What utter horseshit.
