They fixed it though by replacing "retard" with "git"

https://github.com/nixxquality/WebMConverter/commit/c1ac0baac06fa7175677a4a1bf65860a84708d67

Edit: I from re-reading the image they don't just want master change, they want history reverted to completely obliterate the mention:

For what it's worth, I just moved my four repos from GitHub and deleted my account.

Programming is about code, not forcing your own political ideology down people's throats. Github has lost my trust as a code hosting platform, as they required a developer to make a change for political reasons.

Yeah it's a good thing git is built to be decentralized by design. I'm quite tempted to do the same.

I host http://go1dfish.me from github as well (Since it's just a JS client app) and I think it's time for me to get another web host for that at a minimum.

I cloned all my repos over to Bitbucket, where I plan to keep my code.

I am not deleting them (I deleted some old useless repos that were just unmodified forks), but I am no longer uploading new code to Github.

This is really, truly disappointing. I really dislike the use of the word retard in that context (it feels unprofessional, really) but censorship on Github?

Hell, on some place like Reddit or Voat I could almost understand... depends on the kind of community you want to build. But Github is about code, not people. I've never ran git clone http://voat.co/bleh and don't intend to.

[–] ClairityDX 0 points 95 points (+95|-0) ago  (edited ago)

It's definitely unprofessional, but I seriously don't understand the mentality behind censoring slurs like retard (and others, like faggot or chink or anything else). Stupid, moron, and idiot were all once medical terms that became insults for people of low intelligence. So they adopted "retard" as the new indicator of someone below an IQ of X (I think it was 70 or something?).

Now, retard is used as an insult and people are getting their feelings hurt. Even if we successfully eliminated the use of these words somehow, people would find new words to insult people with. Frankly, it's retarded to assume that words are the problem and get mad when people use them in any context.

[–] FPSFairy 1 points 44 points (+45|-1) ago  (edited ago)

"Retard" has scientific meanings, as well. For example, "to slow." "Flame retardant" materials are very slow/resistant to combustion.

but censorship on Github?

What were you expecting, this isn't the first time that Github has engaged in censorship. Back when GamerGate started, they shut down the entire GamerGate section on Github.

[–] InsaneMonkey 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

I couldnt. We came to vote to avoid bullshit like this. Just calling something retarded is not grounds for action from the staff. All this hand holding is getting out of control.

However you point that Git is not a social media platform is completely valid, I really dont see the problem.

git: an unpleasant or contemptible person.

Now I see why linus chose that name :) Now github's name is incredibly appropriate.

[–] Devieus 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

Retard: someone or something that is slow or holding something back

e.g. fire retardant, not fireproof, but it makes sure you're not burned to ash instantly.

I bet their use of retard is actually justifiable as someone who only uses ffmpeg will impede progress in terms of webm implementation in common internet society.

This is a legally dangerous strategy, and given time is the exact cause of death for github.

Now that they've gone on record as having policed one piece of software on their entire network, they can't claim technical immunity when a legally-damaging piece of software is found on their servers. When, for instance, github is found to have hosted code for a P2P network for sharing terrorist manuals, this notice will be "Exhibit A" in the criminal conspiracy case they'll be defending themselves from.

It's not only more reasonable, but far safer to maintain an ignorant approach to user data. You can either claim that the user posting the material is responsible for its content, or you can claim that you're responsible for the content, but if you claim that you're responsible, then buddy you're responsible.

Truly epic dumb move by github.

Well, it kind of depends on if they were responding to a report, eh? Arguably they're still within a safe-harbor if they're just responding to something analogous to a takedown request? If they're scanning their own shit, well yeah, they're fucked.

This and the /r/fatpeoplehate situation are parallels. Reddit has gone that route, and Github will likely follow, too. It'll be interesting to see the future legal consequences, and I'll definitely have my tasty popcorn ready.

The difference is that Bitbucket said the following, proving they aren't run by cucks like Github:

We are aware of the repository in question and have decided to not take it down based on our end user agreement.

Bitbucket is still good, apparently.

EDIT>> They took the project down after all. Downvoating myself...

Don't forget that Google code is also closed down.

I don't want to sound like too much of a tin foil hat conspiracy theorist but doesn't it seem a little odd that all these attacks are against open source software?

0

[–] i_eat_dirt 0 points 20 points (+20|-0) ago

I could be considered quite the paranoid one, but if we listen to Hanlon's and Occam's razor it tends to make sense. With the whole SJW movement going out of control over the past couple years, along with technology being a male dominated industry, it makes the perfect shit brew of attacks on open platforms.

0

[–] GooberGobias 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

I think you're suffering from a bit of selection bias. If there was a closed-source code hosting service that was under assault from SJWs, would we hear about it?

We're hearing about the open source ones because they're open.

There were a ton of posts about it, telling people to pull out fast.

People didn't listen.

Aside from this post, have there been any other repos being affected? Just curious on how widespread Github "attack" is and I am looking through various repos to find out if anyone got a similar takedown issue.

Github just needs to start banning whiny SJWs. Post stupid garbage on a project whining about language or that one of the creators said something on twitter you don't like? Banned. gtfo. This is software, we don't care about your sjw garbage.

Meanwhile, I'm happily over at BitBucket.

[–] due 0 points 15 points (+15|-0) ago

I don't think most people are surprised that Github would take down some user generated content on their site. Of course, it's all within their rights to remove whatever they wanna remove legally speaking. And I don't think anyone would be opposed to Github taking down spam repos, issues, adverts etc. Or in a extremely unlikely case where ISIS starts using Github to host cyberterrorist tools, users would be totally cool with Github taking their shit down. What's pissing people off is that would take tamest shit as the reason to take stuff down.

[–] realpatrickstewart 0 points 8 points (+8|-0) ago  (edited ago)

There's a huge difference between being able to remove a project (e.g. something child porn related), and removing a project "because of muh feels."

People always go the ToS route and they thing that just because something is legally acceptable, it's morally acceptable. The US government can legally throw you in prison without due process. Look at Gitmo. That doesn't make it fucking right.
