All they have to do is push a splash screen to users in these areas, informing them that they aren't allowed to use their service due to the restrictions of their city government.

I would encourage Netflix to test what the people feel that they like more: their elected officials, or Netflix.

They'll probably go with a third party option: VPN

Exactly. Damn politicians are the worst and dumbest people. When can we start lining them up against a wall?

9% tax on Netflix is a lot cheaper than a trustworthy VPN. Granted, it never hurts to subscribe to a VPN.

I'd imagine it's based off of the billing address and not IP. Which is even easier to get around.

And make it non-incriminating: "If you are truly not resident in Chicago, you can evade these problems by taking the following measures:"

Yes, but honestly why should Netflix care? They just charge the additional tax to the customer. It's a line item on the receipt like sales tax.

Because it sets a precedent. Every state, county, city, and neighborhood association will be clamoring for their own tax cut, driving the price sky high (which is exactly the point of this tax in the first place). I wouldn't be surprised if Comcast et al suggested the tax in the first place, competition is tougher than buying politicians, and their purchase of the FCC's chairman position which they tried to use to ruin net neutrality in order to tax Netflix has been foiled for now.

Here is a man who understands. In this case it's a tax. This tax WILL be tossed to customers in this area.

Funny how subsidies work the same way though isn't it? Take oil subsidies away and everyone wants to cheer until those billions turn into twenty cents on the gallon.

Think about it.

Every single fucking day all I hear is

  1. They are or want to raise taxes

  2. They are cutting services or postponing services

  3. They are creating a new law that can potentially make me a criminal or take my money.

Seriously, I'm with you.

But it's only Chicago and will likely be stopped by the courts. You can probably stay on this planet.

Anyone surprised that a democrat run city creates new taxes out of thin air?

I'm sure it will spring the city right out of it's economic and criminal woes...

I'd argue that new taxes are more closely correlated to democrat control vs. corruption. But then again it's hard to distinguish the two.

Every year they claim they're in debt and every year ramp up the taxes in something. If it weren't for my job and family I would've left this place years ago.

It's Chicago, so no. Illinois is always going to be the most corrupt state.

Here's a list of some of Illinois' most corrupt government workers, with articles on each of them. I'm actually astonished that didn't include Rod Blagojevich, the Illinois governor who openly tried to sell the Illinois state senate seat that was opened after Obama was elected, and is now serving a 14 year sentence.

Whoa, get the fuck off my internet and quit trying to tax and throttle everything. I'm actually surprised this went through with the tech presence in Chicago. Did people just not notice what they were planning until it went through?

I noticed. I'm sure many others did as well. As we all know at this point, awareness can't stop an avalanche. :/

Awareness can't.

Calling and talking to your elected officials can.

When will people learn?

Think that's bad? As part of this same series of tax changes, they are also leveling 9% taxes on software licences and cloud services

I feel like "just outside Chicago" is going to become a very popular place for businesses to move to soon.

Are they running fibre and giving free internet to every building in Chicago? Because that is the only thing close to a valid reason this tax could ever have.

Now that city has a real reason to riot!

Kane County has sway, but not that much sway - you can bet your ass the neighboring counties (which have been fighting incorporation, to boot) will fight like mad to keep their hands on the lucrative "tax-free (compared to Chicago)" gig.

[–] Thirdful 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago  (edited ago)

Also a member of Kane county. We are fighting tooth and nail to make sure this same crap doesnt happen here. Chicago is in cook county (next to us). If the Chicago taxing goes county, there parts of the area is looking to change the county map to join Kane. Already many places has "NO COOK COUNTY TAXES" outside the stores.

Chicago was actually a city on my list of next potential homes. Guess this makes my decision that much easier.

[–] avnti 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

This is the thing. This is how you make sure that your city will never be a tech hub. They have crushed their chances of growth in the tech sector, as if that corrupt city needed help.

You're resting a lot of economic weight on whether or not Netflix costs a dollar more a month. I get it. I don't like the tax. The idea of taxing the purchase of a temporary license to watch a movie seems like the wrong direction. But really, honestly, this tax is not going to affect anyone's decisions about where to life or where to do business. There are plenty of other reasons not to do business or live in Chicago.

We're in massive debt. Currently there is a huge pending union pension reform because we owe hundreds of millions in pensions and can't pay them because the adjusted cost of living kept going up with no way to cover it. It's drowning the city. We're looking for any and every way out.
