Can someone explain to me why copyright ever gets longer than life of author? Let alone a lifetime more...

Supposedly, it protects the "livelihood" of authors' families if they die due to uncertainty about lifespans. A fixed 20 year copyright term would be perfectly predictable and easy to plan your finances around.

Wealthy corporations buy properties from the authors, and lobby for laws that extend the duration so they can continue to profit from the properties.
