Just as amazing: RealPlayer still exists.

I'm old enough to remember when "streaming video" meant pointing realplayer at a live stream. That's a weird thought.

Edit: Also, Quicktime. It still exists, too. And unlike RealPlayer, there's occasionally even a reason to use it.

It was necessary for several education certification classes I took this summer. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry that they required RealPlayer.

Yea we just need Porn to move to html5 and Flash is dead.

This has definitely already happened for mobile, since Flash doesn't exist there.

Uninstall flash and you will find the majority already work with html5. There are a few that only work while using the mobile site.

Especially on these larger sites. I feel like most devs moved on to html5 video a while ago. It's the larger companies that are slow I guess.

More amazingly PDF is still a thing. I can't believe an open source alternative hasn't come about yet, considering how common and useful PDFs are.

Once Firefox started blocking Flash, I was amazed at how many websites try to run it, seemingly for no reason.

They are probably using it for web tracking purposes. Ever heard of flash cookies?

I had the same response when I first installed uMatrix (blocks cross-domain resources by default). SO MANY TRACKING SCRIPTS.

Most, if not all non-textual ads are flash based, and most sites have ads...

Chrome has flash built in though. So by installing and using chrome, you're still using flash. Its a separate version, but its still flash and still exploitable.

You can disable it in chrome://plugins/, or install Chromium.

I removed all flash plugins except for Chrome, and normally browse with Firefox. If there's something that absolutely has to have flash, I use a Firefox plugin that lets you open the current page with another browser with a click.

Good to hear, the downside to html5 at the moment is (on YouTube anyway) it only seems to go to 720p and has no 60fps either :( unless something is screwy on my end anyway. Hopefully it gets there soon.

If you're on Firefox you'll need to enable media source extensions in about:config. It might be buggy since it's not completely finished, but it seems to work flawlessly for myself.

I'm using Pale Moon based on Firefox, but I'll look into it. Thank you.

Edit: Pale Moon won't support media source extensions and say that it isn't on the road map either, so I went back to Firefox and fixed all my settings/extensions ect.

long story short it works perfectly Thank you!!

How? Which things do I check/uncheck? Please and thank you.

Are you using Internet Explorer? I noticed that too with YouTube. Firefox will let me go all the way to 4K (and my graphics card can definitely handle it).

No I'm on Pale Moon a build based on Firefox but they don't support MSE and say they won't in the future either, so I'm switching browsers as I type this lol.

Youtube works fine at 1080/720p at 60 fps using html5. Maybe you are using a browser that is not chrome.

Was a browser issue, I just went back to Firefox instead of using a modded version.

It was my understanding that the thing holding them back was the ability to inject video ads into the stream.

I'm hoping that switching to html5 will allow for multicast, greatly reducing bandwidth usage.

multicast

It'll happen real soon now. Just like IPv6.

20% of my internet traffic is IPv6 by now.

Edit: 0% multicast though, heh heh!

How can multicast help normal youtube videos? It would be great for live streams, but not for recorded content that anyone can start/pause/stop watching at any time.

I think he was talking about Twitch, not Youtube.

Back when Twitch implemented the auto muting of VOD's before being bought by Amazon, I will never forget how they said that "HTML5 can not be done, it is impossible". That was in response to a surge of users talking about going to Hitbox. Now that Google is involved, I'm so glad there is competition for Twitch so they can stop being lazy fucking bastards and stop spouting goddamn lies. I used to love Twitch so much man, it was such a good community, then they get bought out by Amazon and they still want half of the subscriber money, have almost no admin presence in channels, and the newer streamers all just want fucking donations.

Seriously, watch a lot of new channels, it's like walking down an alley in NYC but instead of hobos holding up signs for money it's streamers having donation tickers and shit all over.

If you have a slow computer, a good alternative right now is to use Livestreamer. Its a command line tool, but there are some GUI for it, like this one: Link!

[–] pepepepepe 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

Their switch to HTML5 is too late. I've been using Livestreamer/Hexchat for years and completely bypassed their website. Now if they can fix their VODs so they buffer/download correctly with youtube-dl+mpv then I'll be satisfied.

Does this mean I won't have to update flash every god damned time I restart my computer?
