Listening isn't the same as recording and storing.

You can get your records, both Alexa and Google save these files on open internet, not encrypted.

When you say the "hi alexa" the recording of your commands INCLUDES the "hi alexa".

They most likely are encrypted. They are encrypted in transit.

It doesn't really matter, since Amazon has the keys. They can decrypt the data when you download it, for example.

Your words are all stored at some point, because Amazon has to store them to do analytics on and improve their recognition and algorithms. They can't know if a certain phrase or set of words is relevant to improving their algorithms without first storing it. The only question is when/whether or not they delete them.

Listening is processing. A computer can only process by storing data and then operating on it. It could delete the data later, but this is an optional step. Amazon rarely deletes anything, and since the recordings contain the trigger word, we must assume it is continuously recording or the activation command couldn't be part of the output.

Of course they are recording, no data will go to waste. Even if they are 'just' listening, it's not ok. It would be like saying there is nothing wrong with a newly elected Tyrant, because so far he hasn't killed anyone. You have to think a step ahead and not be gullible and accept every step to total oppression as benign until it's too late.

The first step to a killing field will always be a harmless step.
