I use it as default. If I don't like the results I use g! though.

Isn't it !g?

Just tested that, both options work.

I tend to use !g a lot, unless I know where I'm going specifically (!w, !arch, etc). Kind of defeats the purpose.

For google results !disconnect is better, it gives you google results without Google actually tracking you. !disconnectimg is there too.

I've never used DDG, but have been using startpage for about a year as my default.

[–] Heptite 1 points 16 points (+17|-1) ago

Yup, I find StartPage to be far more useful than DuckDuckGo.

[–] diazepam 0 points 21 points (+21|-0) ago

That's because Startpage gets its results from Google.

I'd like to use DDG for privacy etc but the fact is it's still got a way to go to be a good search engine tbh.

I love them both, but why do you think startpage is more useful? I assume startpage has better T.O.S, but I get so tired of having to turn off the default "family filter" crap! (Only a problem if you clear your history a lot...)

startpage looks identical to ixquick, are they under the same owner?

[–] l3ro 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago  (edited ago)

Same owner, the difference is that Startpage gives you results from Google,

While Ixquick gets results from many places, except Google.

Try both, see how you like them.

The bangs are really nice, but use it with a grain of salt if your primary goal is privacy.

Depends on who you are looking for privacy from. The NSA can likely track your traffic regardless of your search engine through ISP logs. I care more about privacy from third parties (at least that's why I use DDG). I'd use Tor and/or a VPN 24/7 if I didn't want the NSA to know what I was doing on the Internet.

That's the thing. I don't see any point in using it. Privacy aside, as a search engine it just isn't anywhere near as good as google, or even bing for that matter. If government surveillance is a concern, I'd be highly skeptical of any company based in the US. The NSA can give them a national security letter and they will have to do whatever they are told and not be able to tell their users they are compromised. If corporate surveillance is a concern, it's going to be very difficult to avoid all the sites and tracking measures ran by all the different companies. Even though I have never used facebook, they likely still have a shadow profile on me. I use an android phone, and it is so thoroughly integrated with google that I'm not sure if it's even possible to stop google from collecting data on me and keep the phone functional. Privacy on the internet is under constant attack from so many different directions that there is no way I will ever feel secure no matter what measures I take. There will always be something I forget or don't know about that will render all the measures useless. So I just assume that nothing I do on the internet is actually private, or untraceable back to me, because it isn't.

But here's the thing. It's a perfectly good search engine. I always find what I am looking for by searching for it with relevant keywords.

I've seen this before, but I don't know anything about 8ch's admins. Are they pretty security savvy people? The first point seems like speculation/begging the question and the second point comes from someone who wrote a scathing article about ddg when they discovered a 3rd party cookie, rather than reporting it to ddg (who did in fact immediately remove it when it came to their attention).

I'll give you point 3 on their, but being in the US also means there's a lot of legal ramifications for breaking your own privacy policies.

That message wasn't put up by 8chan's admin, it was put up by /tech/. It's analogous to a subreddit's "wiki" page.

Not parent, but from my experience unless you enter the perfect search string in ddg, you'll get a lot of irrelevant results. With Google you can usually search for the wrong thing ("Lincoln dunking") and it will give you what you were looking for (that picture of Washington dunking on Kim Jong Un). Google's algorithm is miles ahead of ddg, but I hate how it bubbles you into your own world based on what websites they serve ads to you on.

I've never been a fan. The few times I've used it I've gotten less relevant info than I would with Google. Only people not using Google are those who are anti-Google, of which I am not.

There's no reason for me not to use Google. Then I'd end up using Bing or Yahoo before doing some searches for "Search Engine alternatives" like this was 2001 or something.

I dislike DuckDuckGo, especially because they were inserting their amazon affiliate tag on every product link in their results, with no notification that they were doing so.

I use only Startpage.
