Practically all apps spy on what you do in the app. By default, iOS doesn't allow apps to do much more than that (as opposed to Android which requires rooting and difficult to install 3rd party extensions to somewhat limit spyware behaviour of apps).

For it to really be spyware and monitor you outside of the app, they'd have to have special permissions granted by Apple.

Are there any indications that Apple grants WeChat special spying privilleges such as they did with the Uber app?
