Apple are truly morons for releasing the iwatch. Friend had a phone watch about 7 years ago. Got it from Chinese wholesalers website. The idea was a gimmick it was never usable, and why would you trade a 6" screen for a 2" screen? and much more cumbersome usage. I'd rather spend the money on an analog watch with mechanical movement (slightly biased)

While the market is really trendy, I don't think that smartwatches themselves will ever be a thriving market like the cellphone arms race is. They have some really neat features that make using them a blast to use as well as customization for super-sweet watch faces and nice baked-in health apps. However, for the average person, a smartwatch just isn't super practical and that's who I think they tend to be aiming their advertisements at.

The price point (for the Apple Watch) is a bit too high and goes up pretty quickly. A Moto 360 is about $150, making it far more likely to be used as a daily device by more people. I think that a "budget" Apple Watch would sell like hotcakes.

I know I could be completly, wrong about this, but I think smartwatches will be a very niche market, but a very cool one at that!

For me, I just use my FitBit for a healthtracker and my phone for time and everything else related to a phone.

I believe the wholesalers had them as little as $80 with an Android cell phone in them, so they didn't need a another phone to run off of. They sound great, but again the screen size makes them close to useless. They would be cool if they were only mobile/cell phones and everyone had then unfortunately the telcos got too greedy. Why give you 3 Mb's of data for a video call when at say the current call rates of a $1-$2 when they can charge you 20cent per 140kb (this depends on the country of course, but I would take on the bet that most telco's are overly greedy.

If the watch didn't need a second device and was the size of a current phone but maybe slightly curved then I think they might have something there. (Think Leela from Futurama )
