People don't usually google full web addresses. Google Trends for Reddit vs. Voat shows an entirely different story, and makes reddit look very successful. Voat is nice, but it's still extremely small compared to Reddit. It's not really comparable at all.

Reddit did, however, spend five years on growing to the popularity that Voat has already reached.

It does give some indication but you are right. With this exponential growth it's hard to see where it will plateau. We should defiantly revisit trends in a couple of weeks.

If this manhood101 spam continues growing, it will die pretty soon.

It's kind of interesting that voat seems to be more popular in southeast asia than reddit. I wonder how that will affect voats growth.

Do we want Voat to be as big as reddit? I'd rather have a small great community than a obnoxious one

[–] ManifoldDanger 0 points 35 points (+35|-0) ago  (edited ago)

I would agree except my favorite part of voat and reddt are the smaller subreddits/verses. And the only way for them to feel alive is to have a big enough community for the small communities to be able to function. The slower/smaller subs on reddit are basically dead no-mans lands on voat. What i have done is unsub'd from all the big groups on reddit so the front page is just my smaller subs and then come to voat for the big subs. I have sub'd to the same small subs on voat and submit content to them but they are just dead with out the big overarching community.

I was with Reddit from the beginning and liked it best when it was less well-known. I like the fact that Voat isn't so big yet. I think we just need to stay positive as a community so that people can't say we're the expelled scum of Reddit.

I would think with yet another person jumping ship at Reddit, the staff themselves are starting to see the writing on the wall. When you take a website like Reddit and start going against it's founding principles to try and make some extra money... well those sites do not last too much longer after that. Anyone remember digg? Paid frontpage entries, blah blah blah and it happened FAST. One day it was #1 on the web, then one week later it had lost more than HALF it's user base.

The Internet is a very, very different place now. I know the phrase "Eternal September" has been thrown around for a lot longer, but the demographics of users of services like Digg and Reddit (and indeed, most Internet usage by volume) has changed dramatically since that time. We're a lot farther from the "savvy", early-adopter end of the spectrum, which also happens to heavily overlap with "people who care about issues like the degree of top-down control of content".

There is a fair argument to be made (and it often is) that those people also overlap more heavily with the people creating the most interesting content, but I'm not sure that's all that relevant these days either. Browse the default subs like r/pics or r/funny and a huge chunk of the stuff there isn't exactly OC.

Comparing Digg, Voat, Reddit

Notice how Digg was never that big compared to where Reddit is now.
But the uptick in Voat looks just like the uptick in Reddit, back when Digg was big and Reddit was small.

It is, but this is comparing web addresses. Here are just their names.

I remember the Digg fiasco. I was never a Digg member but I joined Reddit some time right before the "mass exodus" happened. Reddit was only gaining popularity then and the user base and community have changed drastically since those days.

Voat right now feels more like old reddit than reddit feels like old reddit. (Though, there's less of a threat of getting downvoated to oblivion here with some of the new account restrictions which is nice.)

I'm not really sure where I was going with this, I sort of went all Abe Simpson. I guess what I'm saying is that even with a percentage of Reddit's community coming here, this site will be more than successful.

So people google "reddit 4chan"?

And with the term "League of legends"/"4chan" they click on the subs?

It's funny, because I apparently made an account here when it was really new and reddit did away with the visible upvote/downvote counts. I made two posts about it and forgot about Voat. After the recent shenanigans, I tried to make an account here and was shocked that my go-to username was taken already! Then, for the hell of it, I tried logging in and it turned out I had a nearly year old account with all of two comments on it.

I think I might actually stay active this go 'round; reminds me a lot of reddit when I jumped ship from Digg 5 years ago.

Rofl, who is googling Jesus? Are there people that are like - I need God's help, I'd best google for that Jesus dude. Maybe he lives nearby. My cousin said he went to school with him, but he said his name all weird - "hey zeus".

Keep in mind this is the relative search trend, not total volume of searches. Reddit is still getting way more search hits, guaranteed.

A-Fucking-Men. This site wide circlejerk is going to just annoy me off of Voat. There are already subverses for Reddit shit. The mods really need to get on top of this and clean this garbage up.

I'm liking voat a lot and I did come over here from reddit, but I feel like there is too much attention on voat being better than reddit or a constant comparison on why it is better or doing better. It feels like a jealous ex. Let's make voat our own and not some constant cock measuring contest.
