im not a hacker. i didnt spend a penny to take down voat. im not a competitor. i have no hatred towards voat.
proof: the single url that was being request over and over for the past day was https://voat.co/comments/259138/1/
i did battle test voat in different areas with very simple and a very low volume of web traffic with the intention of giving results back to improve the stability. after the whole site instantly went down for several hours i had to wait to continue my testing - again with very simple and a very low volume of web traffic. heres where i went wrong: after the site went down several times i had forgotten to turn off my testing causing the increase of web traffic making them get cloudflare involved. it was only until i saw a news article saying the website was ddosed offline that i thought, hey, did i stop my tests? for that i apologise.
voat devs havent got a clue on how to run a service properly.
voat community is already just as bad as the reddit community.
voat lies to its users
i hope you realise youve given your cash to people without much knowledge on how to run the thing. hire people. people with experience. not just somebody you know. not just somebody that has dealt with low traffic websites. somebody that has worked on high traffic sites
originally 60 requests a second and the site toppled every time. if you cant handle that - you have serious problems. you have profiled your app, right? you are caching db queries, right?
introduce page caching. all of my requests were heading to the same url or at least 1 of 5 on one day. a static page or a very simple cache would have handled that on a single server with ease. (you are checking access logs, right? why didnt you just cache it?)
the website goes down for hours after the traffic is completely halted. why would it be down for hours? what the hell broke so badly that after traffic died down you couldnt get it back up and running?
get some monitoring running. look up graphite or whatever takes your fancy. monitor the number of requests, the number of db calls, the number of logins, the number of active users, the top visited page in the past 12 hours. if you had these then you would have caught most of the issues within minutes and been able to get a work around.
- 'planned maintenance'? you were down because your servers couldnt handle the low 60 requests a second multiple times. dont lie to your users and say otherwise. theyre even thanking you for being transparent while you lie to their faces.
one huge circle jerk. yes i know you all hate reddit, yes i know you all love voat, but jesus christ do you guys go over the top. if you opened your eyes and looked past the goat youll see that many things people hate on reddit are happening right here.
as soon as the 'voat down due to ddos' post appeared, witchhunts instantly started happening. almost ready to burn down reddit and any associated staff. i thought this type of thing would have been left behind but obviously not. use your heads and dont jump to conclusions and acting upon the conclusions. you have no idea whats happening.
praises voat for everything. way too much. its taking down subverses, cant develop applications properly, cant take traffic properly, just ended up with more users as reddit blows up and voat happened to be there with a completely ripped off look. im surprised the legal guys at reddit havent come down hard on you as yet. which they cant - as that would set you all off some more. praise whoever designed the logo. everything else just fell on their laps while they run around with their arms in the air.
voat is based on the premise of no censorship yet its already closing down subverses. then everyone turns a blind eye or even praises voat for it even if they were just raging at reddit for doing the same thing.
open your eyes people. voat is just another (cloned) reddit with the same actions and same content but run by people that dont know what theyre doing. i hope they get their act together as id love to see it grow.
edit: the tests did stop today. you can get your api back up and running as intended now.
edit2: apparently my proof link was mentioned in the announcement, didnt see that originally. obviously only the admins can confirm this, but one of the tests was performing a search for "Search Voat" over and over. they must have noticed that if they monitor anything at all.
people saying the site is working - of course it is. theyve upped their cloudflare game which is what broke their api. these "ddos" tests stopped many hours ago.
people asking why dont i help them instead of sending traffic - how the hell do you test things? ive mentioned exactly how to fix things so it doesnt go down as easy in future. ive provided information on how to resolve issues and how to detect them quickly. this is what people call helping.
and well, as for people praising voat too much, congrats on proving my point.
