Their late architectures are designed by a team in Texas, roughly 100 engineers. VIA chips are relatively slow because they're focused on low power. You can still find some netbooks that use VIA Eden(?) on ebay. If you must go x86 they are probably least likely to take part in this fuckery as embedded industrial (another primary market for VIA) doesn't have much need for "protected" content or consumer spying.
