Exactly which companies provide Internet access through wires? There's only 2. They used to be regulated so they wouldn't fuck the people they were granted infrastructure monopolies over. Hell, I remember when phone companies were legally required to lease out 56K service. To some extent it was applied to DSL. There was less regulation on cable based internet for some reason (probably due to it being a newer tech and money bribes to Congress).

You can probably still find stories on the net involving some baby bell companies trying to "keep bill amounts the same so as not to confuse customers on why their bill went DOWN" when the regulation was removed and they made up a bullshit fee to try and pocket it off anyone paying for their DSL connection. They got caught very quickly.
