I just keep encouraging people to use Linux. Hopefully one day the tide will turn and Linux will become more viable. But, sad to say once that happens Microsoft or some other company will find some way to mess it up - pay a billion dollars to somehow close distros off. Might just be the pessimist in me. Viva la open source!

Until Linux starts seeing some more triple AAA video game titles, I don't think pc users will be adopting it anytime soon.

Microsoft has been using its dominance to shut out alternative OSes for years. Look up the "Microsoft tax".

MS spent years trying to destroy Java. It's bigger than ever, now.

Which distro (is that what it's called?) would you recommend that most closely resembles Windows 7? I've never used anything Linux or even seen it used so I would be an absolute beginner.

Still on W7/DX11. The only game I play that even has the option is Civilization 6. And Civ5 is better anyway.

[–] boggle247 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Agreed. The only game I have with DX12 support is Battlefield 1 and it's shit anyway. Most new games are full of virtue signaling feminist shit anyway ( BF5) so it's no skin off my ass to stay with DX11 on windows 7. I'm hoping that in the next few years the games I do play will have adequate support via Wine in Linux so I can make the jump. I tried VFIO gpu passthrough and it kind of works but it is still buggy and is not the perfect solution like many on the linux forums claim that it is. And besides, you're still running a Windows OS in a VM anyway so it kind of defeats the purpose anyway.

I think so too. I tried 6 and went back to 5.

It won't work forever. There are a bunch of features that re-enable that service periodically if they detect that it's disabled. You need to flip some switches in the group policy thing, and to disable the scheduled tasks that re-enable the service.

That looks like the Win95 interface. Is that a theme you can switch to, or did you have to hack it to look like that?

Because i like being able to do things with my.computer (which leaves out macs) without a 100 page manual on how to use c# to change screen resolution in gnome (linux)

Its really a no brainer. I guess if linux eventually goes mainstream ill think again but meh...

That's because the current CEO of Microsoft right now is a street shitter. Oddly, no one seems to want to bring this up.

How is a "street shitter" more financially successful than you? Where did you fail in life?

Tokenism.

He's being used to promote the narrative that H1B's are totally skilled people, and that Indians are effective at technical jobs.

Because in reality they are not.

Do you think your government is there to protect you also?

Microsoft's names for spyware are as bad as Soviet names. "The People's Commissar for Labor," "Central Party Committee," "The Politburo of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union," "The Secretariat of the Communist Party in charge of Verification of Fulfillment."

Microsoft just calls them "Windows Update Facilitation Service," "Windows Update Assistant," "Update Assistant V2," "Windows Remote Management," "Group Policy Settings for Windows Update." "Device Installation Settings for Manufacturers' apps and custom icons."

In both cases it's torturing language to hide the fact that the entire purpose is to fuck you.

Work out of the box with 2 factor email accounts for major, well used services.

Give you the full function of an expensive copier/printer

No touch apps. The convertible laptop is the ONLY growing category and there is generally no support for that.

If you don't want linux, upgrade to windows 7. Yes, you can even make it work on the latest processors and get updates despite MS' attempt to sabotage those things

Problem is we have ~500 days before it ceases to be supported by MS.

IT is a fucking trainwreck nowadays.

Mint is okay as a starter distro just to get away from Windows but Mint just isn't a good distro.

Don't be a pussy and go with Manjaro. It's Arch with training wheels.

0

[–] Alopix 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

The main reason Mint is even relevant is because of Ubuntu's insane decision to replace the UI with weird bullshit.

Security updates aren't always visible by default when updating. Their website was compromised a while back so for a time there was an infected installation image being distributed. It's not a rolling release so every few years you go through update hassles.

There are more criticisms available on the Internet from people much angrier and more involved than I am.
