It's pretty hard to find an Android alternative.

While there are some alternatives, none are perfect. We need more alternatives built from the ground up to be better morally and ethically. The barrier of entry for producing technology we actually own is insanely high. IMO, Android is the least of our worries, when the entire mobile ecosystem is pozzed from the ground up.

If you really need a cell phone, get a dumb phone, or Purism's 'librem 5' which is at the very least a step in the right direction, as it runs linux, has killswitches, and runs on mostly opensource hardware. Sadly still, I have reservations.

Purism most likely still uses the android Kernel when you run Linux on it. I'd go for hardware that has mainline Linux kernel support. The folks working on Maemo Leste and PostmarketOS are doing a great job.

Don't need one. If you don't trust your phone, don't say anything you wouldn't say in a court of law while in the same room as it. Ideally, stick it in the fridge. Terrible for the battery, but it guarantees you won't have service.

Just get a cheap phone you can root.

Still has to run a compromised kernel due to hardwired chipsets.

Better than nothing but basically still compromised. All you did was make the NSA run a different set of scripts.
