This is why I call myself an egalitarian instead of a feminist now. There's a subset of feminists who believe women > men because of the long long history of male domination ('Now it's our time!'). Which is silly, and counterproductive.

[–] jallab 2 points 111 points (+113|-2) ago

Egalitarianism is a very noble cause, but you must see that men and woman are not equal. This is a biological truth, so egalitarian ideology falls short in many places. That being said, for every place it can logically be applied, it should.

Those people are not feminists, they are female chauvinists, and need to be called out by name for who and what they are.

Feminism can still mean gender equality if we can change the way we use the language.

Yeah the term 'feminism' is loaded with so many things now that are not even feminist issues.

[–] tame 0 points 26 points (+26|-0) ago

There are a set of people who identify as feminist who are aiming for male subjugation. They're not feminists (as the women in my life define it) and they don't want equality. The word 'feminist' has been polluted by bigots to the point where it doesn't mean what it once did.

Equality means not giving a fuck who is in front. Why the fuck does anyone give even the tiniest of shits who is in front of the other? It's an icon on fucking facebook. Fuck, make them a boob and a tiny prick for all I care.

I don't care that there is now a woman in front of the image. I do care that they felt it necessary to make the change, and that they seem to ignore the obvious hypocrisy.

Facebook designer Caitlin Winner said she didn't like that. "Much to my dismay," she wrote, "not long into my tenure as a Facebook designer I found something in the company glyph kit worth getting upset about."

Yeah, I bet it's not hard when you're constantly on the lookout for something to offend you.

Did she actually get upset at a drawing of a silhouette? I mean that seems a tad hypersensitive.

To be fair, her first few gripes are with the female silhouette's shoulder width, stature, and "Darth Vader helmet haircut."

She was offended over the shoulders for Christ's sake. Fucking. Shoulders. Fucking shoulders on a tiny ass icon. If she can't handle that, then she probably isn't ready for the world outside of her own delusions.

[–] fleas 1 points 24 points (+25|-1) ago

Lol jokes on her. The rear position is the one of power. Generals don't lead from the front.

The change to the male's shoulders is the bigger change. She decided to make them more feminine

A leader is best when people barely know that he exists, not so good when people obey and acclaim him, worst when they despise him. Fail to honor people, They fail to honor you. But of a good leader, who talks little, when his work is done, his aims fulfilled, they will all say, "We did this ourselves."

[–] amio 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

I actually thought of something even simpler - the man being right behind the woman and... well, it doesn't require any more explanation.

Of course, her thinking this is worth "getting upset over" means she's such an idiot the irony will be completely lost on her.

I like how feminists choose to focus on the most trivial shit ever. Oh wow, this tiny logo that hardly anyone pays attention to has a man standing in front of the woman. What a terrible injustice!

As a woman, educated at a women's college, it was hard not to read into the symbolism of the current icon; the woman was quite literally in the shadow of the man, she was not in a position to lean in.

Ugh, I can't be the only one who hates the phrase "lean in"?

1
75

[–] Jyusan 1 points 75 points (+76|-1) ago

Why does she think her interpretation is the original intention? I assume the original design meant to show a line of people, to correspond to your "list of friends". I find it more aesthetically pleasing than the new one. But hey I'm a woman who didn't go to "women's college" but an Engineering University so what do I know.

0
30

[–] bocephus607 0 points 30 points (+30|-0) ago

The irony of this being that your education path is actually beneficial to women as a whole because it demonstrates your gender's ability to contribute to a highly skilled, highly demanded workforce and command higher average salaries and economic power. Yet it's the loud-spoken fickle whiny do-nothing that gets the credit for advancing feminist goals.

People really need to learn to just ignore extremist groups. When corporations give into even the tiny demands they give them power that they shouldn't have.

[–] 769112? 0 points 11 points (+11|-0) ago

I always thought that the "two people, with one person's shoulder being blocked from view by the person in front of them" thing was just meant to be minimalistic: can't get mistaken for your own profile icon/button, includes both men and women, can be easily scaled up or shrunken down for any future app platforms, etc.

Sure, the woman's original haircut looked more like a Darth Vader helmet than an actual hair style, but that could be easily fixed in a future icon update.

Heck, they even could have designed a few designs for both genders in both position (AKA "large with two shoulders" and "small with one shoulder") and had a random combination picked by the server when showing the webpage. That would have been perfect gender equality.

Instead, it was "Hey, I'm a graduate from a private women's liberal arts college, and I am offended by a man taking any perceived precedence over a woman. I'm going to say I want equality, even as I work to constantly put men beneath women in the social hierarchy".

Not that I really expected Facebook to make a choice to counter the SJWs that seem to infest our social media.

[–] polymorphist 0 points 10 points (+10|-0) ago

I assumed no ill intentions, just a lack of consideration but as a lady with two robust shoulders, the chip offended me.

She doesn't think it was the original intention, she's just offended anyway.

One of the things I hate with this new "Progressive" movement is how often the victim card gets played. People are practically looking for things to get offended by. A fucking logo...seriously? THAT'S what you're worried about? I really doubt the person who designed that logo was thinking "Haha fuck women because misogyny!" But no because modern third wave feminism is all about being a victim and if you can't find a way to play the victim card, it's inherently wrong.

0
19

[–] Orbitrix 0 points 19 points (+19|-0) ago  (edited ago)

Yep. Like Jerry Seinfeld said in reference to why he never plays college campuses anymore: [paraphrasing] Kids these days don't know what these words even mean anymore: "Thats sexist, thats racist, thats able-ist, thats fat shaming, blah blah blah blah". They just want to be offended, and will go out of their way to do it. They don't know what actual sexism or racism is anymore, and its ruining comedy, creativity and public discourse.

And don't even get me started on "Micro-aggressions". If you have to dig that deep to be offended, to play the victim card, or you think 'micro-aggressions' actually add up to having a meaningful impact on society: you're an imbecile, and a pussy, and your opinion doesn't deserve to be heard since you are clearly toxic levels of incompetent and inexperienced.

I wouldn't call it "progressive". I've always affiliated the progressive movement as part of the labor movement. I would consider these kinds of things as part of the "liberal" movement, which would be more focused on civil rights. In my mind the two are pretty distinct, even if the modern media likes to use the two terms interchangeably.

Ya I looked and saw two people, it could have been two men, two women, or a man and a woman. She looked at it and had to gender them. She decided that the one with shorter hair had to be a man and the one with longer hair had to be a woman, which is sexist right there. She then went on to get offended by the sexist way she gendered them, and decide it needed to be fixed.

I don't think anyone notices it, even more so considering the lady that changed it never noticed it as well and only saw it in a "glyph kit" which I assume is just the icon folder? Can someone illuminate me on what it is?

0
4

[–] Shammyhealz 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

A glyph kit is a standard set of icons used. For instance if Facebook were to develop a new app, they use the icons from the glyph kit so the appearance of the product is similar to the rest of Facebook's line of products. They also don't have to spend time and money making new icons.

A lot of big companies do it. Google does the same thing with that ubiquitous swoopy g that's on all their stuff. It identifies it instantly as a Google product.

Interesting. Why not place to silhuettes side by side if this is so terribly important? Having the female silhuette in front is telling you something about the supposed fight for equality. It really a competition for feminists and they want to see women in front.

0
11

[–] danunit 0 points 11 points (+11|-0) ago

Well they should just make them not have a gender at all. Two shapes of a human body with a somewhat circle head and no hair... Then they won't get in trouble for forcing binary genders upon people... you watch, I can assure you people will now get upset that it's a male and female person. Rule #1 of post 2013ish internet, someone is ALWAYS offended.

I bet if I said I prefer sourdough bread over wholewheat someone would get offended by my discrimination against bread types. #triggered

My only problem with the icon is it doesn't really symbolize friendship all that well. Why not have them both with arms around shoulders facing the viewer? They'd be side by side and there would literally be no issues at all.

1
3

[–] leetdood 1 points 3 points (+4|-1) ago

I agree with you. I'm pretty anti-SJW and this is... who gives a fuck. It's a logo, facebook paid someone to change it, they made a minor change so the woman is in front. I don't care why she did it, because it's a logo. Call me when someone wants to complain about something important. If she removed the man or something, maybe that'd be annoying. But all she did was make a minor change. Can we pick something better to pick on?

0
7

[–] Xasz 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

It's certainly not a hill to die on or anything like that, but it's a ridiculous example of a major corporation buying in to the PC/SJW culture and then issuing a grandiose, self-congratulating statement on it. Is it worth boycotting Facebook over? No, especially if all their privacy bullshit hasn't convinced you by now. But it's a great thing to mock them over, and a little way to push back at the tidal wave of crazy that this way of thinking is bringing.

0
2

[–] raspberryvine 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

It's a slippery slope. Tiny changes is how big changes get successfully implemented without people noticing. The fact that it's a logo is, as you say, not to give a fuck. But saying that having the woman in front of the man is for egalitarianism, then this is BS. People on this thread are just raising awareness that there is a subset of women, called feminists, that conceil their ideality of women superiority behind an "equal rights" pretext.
