The dude made copies of restore utilities, which are available for free for anyone to download. The utils allow installation of windows os onto a pc. You still need to have the license key sticker to activate and use the freshly installed os. He didn't do anything bad, he was trying to encourage recycling of old computers by making the reinstallation of windows less of a hassle. Without a valid license number, the discs are worthless. Microsoft is wrong, again, and is jumping at the opportunity to knock out a competitor. MS will make zilch on a refurbished computer since the os was already paid for by the original owner. A brand new pc requires a new license, for which MS charges 200 bucks, or whatever, but a recycled pc makes MS zero bucks. Once again MS is MS, the same corporate dickhead as per usual.

Bought my Win7 copy for 10 bucks on EBAY last year. I believe the license keys com from bulk corporate purchases that are unused which I'd say is far more questionable than what this guy is doing.

But at that point MS already got their money from the corp.

You said it. Free. As in he is in trouble for selling them. Especially selling them with labels close to identical as the real product

"planned obsolescence... That's not what a healthy society should have."

When the government says profits before our society. And us.

That's not what it says at all. It says they are debating if he can make money on their intellectual property which they offer for free. I put money that the software agreement that comes with that disc covers selling them. Apparently he also duplicated the original labels which can be infringement

It isn't a problem of profit, it's a problem of favoritism. Courts need to be unbiased but are filled with leftists and shills

Welp, the only comments here which mention linux are downvoated. It's almost like someone wants to paint linux in a bad way.

Boy you people are fucking up this world into oblivion.

"Prosecutors said the 33-year-old ripped off Microsoft Corp. by manufacturing 28,000 counterfeit discs with the company's Windows operating system on them. He was convicted of conspiracy and copyright infringement, which brought a 15-month prison sentence and a $50,000 fine."

The feeling I get from reading the article is, most likely, the case is going to be thrown out.

Never, ever, assume anything based on a headline, doesn't matter worth shit what the source is.

I swear companies are the main reason we’re 30 years technologically behind

No, just government and copyright law.

Sure, our individualistic society that puts profits before people has nothing to do with it. Maximizing profit does not maximize innovation. Buy out all competitors and then manufacture products that fail in one year, or pump out a slightly "better" product after 6 months.

This doesn't innovate, it practically extorts. Big government is certainly no help but don't pretend a perfectly free market will magically serve the people instead of profit, not when our moral grounds are as bad as they are.

Dude already did a deal with Microsoft. He'll be their spokesman in the future for a Windows product that is free to distribute.

Remember how windows 10 was free at the beginning? You pay for it in other ways.

Besides the fact giving it away free helped reduce their product diversity and saved them a lot of costs

MS is scrambling for anyway to try and compete with open source. Right now they are injecting code into thousands of projects... They will use the free coding labor provided by the open source community to make linux be as "point and clickable" as Windows or Mac. When it is all polished MS will make it a software as a service kinda thing for the low price of $5/month for "tech support".
