There's nothing wrong with WOLOLOLO. It converts Redditors into Voaters. In this political climate we need so many more Voaters.

Can we leave the cancerous SJWs there?

0

[–] Azriel777 0 points 19 points (+19|-0) ago

Well, reddit was IS turning into a giant SJW hive hug box, a lot of that is because a lot of mods/admins were SJW's themselves. We need a way to prevent mod/admin abuse here and to make sure that people with clear biases, political beliefs, shills, etc do not take over again. There needs to be some type of power balance system where users can override mods/admins and potentially kick them out if they start abusing their authority.

I think voat's rules about limited upvoting and not being able to downvote until you've contributed will filter out a lot of the fucktards

Thanks, I'm new and didnt know. I tried downvoting to see if you were messing with me :p You weren't! Voat had a nice little msg slide down. I like the ux/ui, still clicking around.

I was against it at first, and still think it needs to be adjusted a little, especially the 100 ccp to downvote is too harsh, at least lower it to half or lower because it was so frustrating to not be able to have any input it nearly drove me away, but after I got over the hurdle, I do like it a little. However, like I said, it needs to be lowered a bit, because it really is too intimidating for new users.

Hopefully reddit's trickle-down content will remain just good enough to keep the idiots there happy while voat is able to continue growing into an awesome community. We'll take the good, they can keep the mediocre.

[–] RoseEsque 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Precisely what we need. There definitely are some people who will be unable to leave reddit (same thing that was with Digg) but most of the genuine content creators will leave when they start company-policing the front page and the content.

I believe it does have a great chance, it will require all of the support that community is willing to provide. I do not think that financial support alone will do it though, maintaining healthy discussions and raising interesting topics will be the most important part of that fight.

[–] Fougare 0 points 9 points (+9|-0) ago

I'm realizing that the community is so much smaller that I feel more obliged to contribute content and/or comments.

I guess not competing with thousands of very very active redditors should make it easier to post submissions that others will enjoy... Just a matter of actually doing it I guess.

[–] dashandgander 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

I agree with this completely. It feels a bit like an new frontier, you kind of feel obliged to help fill the empty spaces with something productive.

[–] Azriel777 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

I think Voat needs to hurry up and implement a HIDE button feature so people can hide stuff they are not interested in or finished with. It would let content flow faster for people who do not want to see the same topics for hours.

I worry that everyone will think like you and the great exodus wont happen. Then were left with a bunch of dishearten people expecting more then they got. I hope I'm wrong, just worried about getting my hopes to high up.

Honestly, I like voat as it is now. The comments are much less vitriolic as they've become on reddit in the recent years. I think the people that are fed up with reddit are the ones that do care about community, and they are the ones leaving, hopefully coming here.

Voat feels like what I imagine reddit was when it was still small. I hope all the morons, loudmouths and attention seekers stay there and we get the cool people.

Interesting read, definitely agree with the sentiment that most people don't care and will simply follow the content. I believe anyone who would leave for reasons based on values on principle has done so already. The next wave must be to get those who would come because voat is simply the better alternative.

My suggestion to voat would be to recruit. Tomorrow will be a great day for it, go and engage major content creators; appeal to their egos offer them recognition and a piece of control and do what the best businesses do and take the best talent. Voat will treat them better, voat will even pay them and to be the new and true front page of the web we need the content creators first and foremost and the rest will follow.

TLDR Most people don't care enough to act on principle, they will follow content. We should recruit content creators and tomorrow will be a good day for that. When they cross the line its only a matter of time before the rest follow.

Maybe they should try to snag Victoria now she is not at Reddit, that would be interesting too see the reaction of everyone.

[–] Caerlocc 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

They likely can't pay as well as Victoria can earn elsewhere; Voat hasn't grown enough yet for that kind of thing.

[–] Boukert 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Recruitment might help, but I would say we need to encourage all and especially (former) lurkers to post their own content. We can all make the basis of a great new community

To be honest I prefer that everybody stays and reddit and we keep our nice community for ourselves. Once voat becomes to big it will become as reddit unless the owners do something against that.

BTW — what do Reddit's employees actually do ?

If a few guys in Switzerland can build a credible competitor to a 10 year old Silicon Valley company who just raised 50 million USD … what is Reddit actually spending its employees and money on ?

0

[–] CrackingYs 0 points 15 points (+15|-0) ago

By the looks of their employee profile pics they eat a lot of cheeseburgers and ban people and subreddits that say the "other" F word.

Do we know what the employees were tasked to do, even before the fundraising ?

OK for the cost of living in SF. Does this mean that SF is now detrimental to creating a startup ? (Still good for fundraising, not so good if the money will be burnt in the high cost of living)

Voat is just SO much better for the user. You can see up/downvoat ratio, block subverses, load images in comments, use superscript with the click of a button instead of ^^^doing ^^^shit ^^^like ^^^this, and there's apparently subverse chatrooms and probably more shit I haven't discovered! Why didn't reddit have this? I'm staying for the long haul.

Its got a lot of good, but it also missing a lot of features like a hide button, it also has some head scratching features like dragging a link (even accidentally) brings up a share a link overlay which is more annoying than useful and needs an option to turn it off.

The problem with Voat at the moment is that it's not very appealing to the casual user. Back on Reddit, people would just upvote most of the interesting content for me and it would be refreshed every few hours. Here on Voat you actually have to go through all the content only to find very few good submissions and then having to wait almost a day for the new submissions to make it to the top. Most subverses I was subscribed to on Reddit are pretty dead over here, generating only about 5 submissions per day.

This makes my frontpage pretty shitty so I switch to /v/all but all I see are the same memes, complains about reddit, and introductions being repeated over and over again.

Now I know what you're thinking, this could all be fixed if people like me would contribute more to the community, but you gotta understand that I do all of my lurking on mobile, usually when I'm at work or late at night laying in bed with insomnia. There's no way in hell I'm going to contribute much when almost every website only allows you to view their shitty broken mobile sites. Hopefully it gets better for us casuals in the next few days.

There still some missing features from RES and they need to fix the algorithm of the site. I hope they update the site regularly, that will make people feel like the owners do care about the site.

The best part about it though is yes, it's alpha still. Voat has tons of promise, which is what I'm excited for. (They of course need to act on that promise, but for the moment, I'm excited for what Voat has to offer)

If we can grow the original content on this site and the people behind it can manage to make it grow reliably... yes, it's indeed possible that Reddit gets a serious long term hit.

It might even go down, given that Reddit doesn't have a platform that people really depend on, like Facebook sadly kind of has managed to create. (Probably because they are smart and didn't forget what happened to MySpace.)

[–] Revelation6VIII 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

If the admins of voat and the mods of the verses can all learn from the failures of reddit (censorship, lack of transparency with it's users, or even mods) and not repeat them, I can see voat cannibalizing the content contributors of reddit. And as many other have pointed out, the bulk of users will follow content. Donations and backers will be needed to minimize downtime (another constant issue reddit seems to have) and help with site upkeep but I feel if the community wants it to work and helps, it will work.

And plus, goats are the new aliens... right?

Reddit has become the middle aged lady who used to be hot in her heyday, but got fat, bitches at the world, does nothing but smokes and sits on the couch, along with still wearing the clothes she wore 15 years ago when she was skinny, but the fat rolls are hanging out and voat is like the hot younger sister that reddit is starting to get jealous of.

I think that a few community events would be beneficial as well. As an example, Reddit had the April Fools Day events. The button in particular gave a way for everyone to interact and get connected for a short period of time.

You serious? Reddit is still exactly as active as it always was. After its little drama weekend everything went completely back to normal.

People love getting riled up over a shitty CEO, but at the end of the day weekend, they want their cat pictures.
