I started getting into Linux because of Windows 8. Linux has given me its share of headaches (not that it's much worse than Windows), but the overall impression Windows 8 left on me was that Microsoft just didn't care about their work or respect their customers. Linux is far from perfect, but at least the community is striving for improvement.

Walk into work. Oh, machine automatically shut itself down for an update. It says it will be done installing the update in 45 minutes. https://imgoat.com/uploads/5f4a8d465e/77413.jpg

Does this machine not get that it works for me?

At my last job I worked for a large pharmaceutical company. At their offices they had a couple of desktops setup as servers to run dedicated systems. The kind of tasks that someone literally setup these PCs 5 yrs ago... no documentation... NOTHING to go on, yet each server ran business critical systems that for the last 5 yrs just worked and nobody ever gave it a second thought. Oh and the person responsible for the servers was let go due to downsizing 4 yrs ago. Nobody even knew these two servers existed, they were not on the books ANYWHERE. Honestly it was a learning experience and another reason why I don't sleep at night if I know I put a system into production and did not leave anything behind for future techs.

Well for 5yrs everything worked fine... then Windows 7 AUTOMATICALLY updates to Windows 10... both "servers" did this on the same week. And suddenly on one week both systems stopped working. Then I had to sort that mess out. I swear this job is the reason why I can't stop drinking... and M$ is definitely contributing to this in a big way. Auto upgrades to Windows 10 for Windows 7 systems when M$ knows that most installed programs will stop working after the upgrade... and they forced it on us anyway.

FUCK M$!! Fuck'em with a long rusty pipe.

Oh, machine automatically shut itself down for an update.

Yell at your sysadmin. Enterprise versions can be configured down to when and if you want to update.

It says it will be done installing the update in 45 minutes.

You must have got some Windows Ultron or something, because it doesn't approximate install time.

Does this machine not get that it works for me?

Are you group administrator? No? Then it doesn't work for you - you work with it.
Windows has three types of admins - file admin (owner), system admin, and group admin. While on linux root is GOD, system administrator is merely an elective king, with group admin being the nobility that's the real power. The Queen of England to Parliament. It's useful in corporate environment.

Windows 8 was beta Windows 10. Just like Vista was beta Windows 7. The fact that Vista and 8 were sold as an OS shows that MS is as greedy as it gets. Sell a beta OS that has problems, wait 2 years, then present the newer better version.

How useful is Wine? I've not touched it for a decade.

Windows is the hot girl that constantly trash talks you and is full of STDs from slutting around. Linux is the Vivian James type girl, the 6/10 who shares your interests and enjoys spending time with you.

Sure, the blonde has more games will blow your mind in bed while Viv is up late doing an EVE raid, but if you let her into your life -- or god forbid your heart -- it can only end in regret.

Windows is safe...so long as you keep the PC turned off and never connected to a power source.

Navy used to have "Orange Book Compliance" for their NT/2000 Servers. It was basically just like you said. You needed a tempest enclosure, the system couldn't have USB ports/serial/parallel ports or disk drives unless they were certain ones which each had their own certifications. An analyst would have to go into the room and transfer data to the isolated maching through an "approved" method.

It was torturous, nothing could be on any network.

Aboard the USS [self censored, to protect the idiots], their servers had USB and serial ports. Wonder if they disconnected them from the motherboard? The USMC just bought whatever was available. I hated the Navy Comm personnel, SJW promotions before that was even a thing. 2 or 3 white guys running around doing everything while the rest bitched they weren't doing enough.

Hey mate Linux Mint Cinnamon is really great and will run Steam and SteamOS games out of the box. You should try it.

Mint is very user friendly, setup and interface wise, but either based on Ubuntu or Debian and therefore relatively slow to update (bar vital security updates). If one doesn't mind being at the bleeding edge, development wise, nor willing to delve deeply into command lines, go for it!

This is why I began a boycott of Microsoft in the 8th grade. I don't play their games, I don't have their consoles, I don't run their OS, use their email or office suite, and I don't use Skype.

Hating the direction windows is going.. I don't want windows to be more like apple.
I HATE crapple.

Suggest calling Microsoft directly for your licensing problem.

I dual boot now for the first time in fourteen years. Before that I used either Debian, Slackware or FreeBSD.

I really don't see an improvement between Win10 and WinXP. The purpose of an operating system is to provide services and resources to the applications that you run, then get the fuck out of the way. Win10 does not do this.

It's almost like MS has forgotten what an OS is really for.
