TLDR: Card skimmers are now using GSM (cell network, using SIM cards) to send your card data via text message to the thief. The skimmers are being found inside gas pumps making them nearly impossible for you to see as its not an "add on" piece that looks obvious.
If given the option you should always run your debit card as credit. This is important because a Credit card requires the company to provide the "onus of truth" to prove that you DID make a payment.
Debit cards work like check's and require you to provide the "onus of truth".
Basically, With Debit/Check you are on the hook to prove you didn't do something. With credit the Credit Card Company is on the hook. There is a weird middle ground with Debit cards that are ran as credit cards.. It puts the liability back on the issuer rather than the user. (unless ran as debit). Yeah, Strange.. I know.

This is why I never use a debit card for anything, only a credit card.

An added perk is that if debit often times the fees go to the bank, and if credit it often goes to the store. As a result some banks offer perks or points for using it as credit, few if any stores offer you anything for using it as debit. The result is that as credit you get a minor something, as debit you get nothing.
