That's what worries me, because Pao is just one person, she's not the (only) reason Reddit is tanking. A lot of it is the behind-the-scenes interests, and those interests could easily spill into the Reddit replacements.

I'd really like to see Voat do something unique and community-minded with their investing, like an equity-based crowd-funding to raise capital. It's not perfect (someone could still buy a lot of shares), but at least it's MORE community-minded than letting a handful of VCs dictate the direction of the site.

That needs the people who use the site to pay for it. And if voat goes paid, I don't think even one percent of us will remain here.

You don't think that people would be willing to pay for a small stake in Voat? Prior to the last few weeks, if you owned a small stake in Reddit, it would have been (on paper) worth quite a bit. It also might have kept this entire ordeal from even occurring in the first place.
