I already buy a ton of novelty electronics. For me, it would be interesting if it does something that none of my existing electronics do. If this same display worked off of power-over-ethernet, or monitored a LAN, that would be novel enough, and unique enough to buy, and it still would have the secondary function you want from it.
Ah ha! What about using Bluetooth Mac addresses to track who is nearby? You can use your friends bluetooth address to show just them a custom message while everyone else sees a different message.
You can also have analytics to see who is coming by your desk when your not around :)
Hmm, it could be power-over-ethernet the circuit has a booster from 3.7V to 15V. The downside is you need a cable. What about WiFi and if you wanted unlimited power just connect a USB cable to the battery? Adding WiFi is definitely doable with about $5 more cost. Your Cell phone already has WiFi though and anything that needs to be sent can be done from an app on your phone to the dPlaque through Bluetooth?
