As a programmer, I know how fast code can execute. Nothing in these patterns is very fancy. It's like a Roomba on coke, but the automation takes the fun out of it. Even if someone wrote good code, it's over too fast to tell / appreciate the logic.
The bright white border to the black ring makes me think you're right, Even autonomous bots from the 90s would use white on black or black on white to delineate areas they could go through.
I dont see that in the video. Many of the victories were won not by just rushing,but also tricks. One bot pulled a perfect matador,sidestepping its rushing opponent and letting them drive right off the ring. There does seem to be strategies involved that an AI would have trouble with,and if anyone can drive these things that well,it would be Japan or SoKo. Also near the end you can see a guy with a controller hanging around his neck.

They are likely automated, not controlled. I honestly found it a bit boring.
