The companies don't care so much directly, but the advertisers and governments who buy the data sure do. They want to own and control you.
Just look at Google and Microsoft - they will do anything to have your data on their cloud system, and their software on your electronic devices (i.e. access to any audio/video peripherals which may be present).
The privacy debate itself is a different question entirely; the point is that this question is answered by pointing out that the product being sold is your freedom.
