Firstly, as contractors, you can't be "fired", only have your contract "completed." Secondly, I've spent over 17 years, in a variety of teams at Microsoft, and 2 years at Amazon, 2 of the largest IT employers in the world. In my experience, Microsoft managers are more politically concerned with securing their own positions than with creating a healthy work environment. For example, would a decent manager "complete" a persons contract, due to a simple mistake involving inaccurate documentation, or would they work to resolve the actual cause? Well, at MS, if a manager can pin something on you, without having to take their own responsibility, then they just might. Another contractor can always be found.

At my last position at MS, myself, and 3 other people were "completed" because the manager didn't want to admit that their processes were undocumented and in some cases inaccurate. We're talking about major environments and resources such as all of Xbox & .Live infrastructures.

How many people on Microsoft's main campus are contractors? Do the contractors have blue employee badges and non-hyphenated email addresses?

There are 2 contractors for every single FTE at Microsoft as of last year. Don't take my word for it, the information is readily found with a simple Google search. There are, by far, many more non-blue badges at Microsoft. I used to manage many of their internal business apps, including Headtrax (if you worked there, you know it is the main employee information database/portal), so I've also had direct access to real information.
