As someone who has done this a few times, you will get fired as soon as the manager knows it was you. There's zero compassion or respect for the wisdom that comes from these types of mistakes.
Depends on the company / industry. I am guessing your experience is not from an IT giant? I never worked for Amazon, but I have for a comparable company, and I would be shocked to hear someone got fired over something like this. Then again Amazon reputedly treats their employees worse than the likes of Microsoft / Facebook / Google.
Firstly, as contractors, you can't be "fired", only have your contract "completed."
Secondly, I've spent over 17 years, in a variety of teams at Microsoft, and 2 years at Amazon, 2 of the largest IT employers in the world.
In my experience, Microsoft managers are more politically concerned with securing their own positions than with creating a healthy work environment.
For example, would a decent manager "complete" a persons contract, due to a simple mistake involving inaccurate documentation, or would they work to resolve the actual cause?
Well, at MS, if a manager can pin something on you, without having to take their own responsibility, then they just might. Another contractor can always be found.
At my last position at MS, myself, and 3 other people were "completed" because the manager didn't want to admit that their processes were undocumented and in some cases inaccurate. We're talking about major environments and resources such as all of Xbox & .Live infrastructures.
