To add to /user/Zaimoxis' comment: WhatsApp uses Open Whisper System's products on Android. (iOS was in the works, anyone knows what's-(a)p with that? Also, group messages are not encrypted even on Android. Source

OWS has a Snowden endorsement on their site, which isn't bad at all, verified, he namedropped them in particular in an interview. Not to say that Whatsapp is 100% trustworthy, but it at least has end to end encryption when used with Android phones, which is better than the majority of popular chat systems, excluding iMessage.

Good point! It's one thing to contract OWS and quite another to use the full-range of their services, given that their parent company may be actively obligated to not do so, don't you think? CryptoCat looks good for iOS, albeit browser based.
