Why is Microsoft giving away free copies of windows 10 anyway? They normally charge 100$ for an operating system and they are just giving this away? Are they gonna sell our user data? Is there iaps? How does Microsoft make money by giving away free products that cost 100 bucks a pop?

Support costs. It's far cheaper to bring every one to the same level for support in terms of bugs and development than it is to keep developing or supporting multiple platforms. It won't do away with it entirely but it will reduce it greatly.

Microsoft makes most of its money (regarding Windows, not their other services) from licenses with OEMs. Microsoft also spends a significant amount of money maintaining old versions of Windows and making new software still be compatible with old versions. They have an incentive to keep everybody up-to-date and minimal cost because eventually that user is going to purchase a new computer.

They give up a tiny source of revenue, but they also (ideally) shed a major cost.
