You haven't dealt much with the average public, have you? I have dealt with people that don't even know what a power cord is, let alone a power supply, heat sink, BIOs, or registry.

That said, about the only reason I'd take something to them is to avoid voiding a warranty. In practice, though, I don't think I will ever take anything to them, even if they weren't blabbing to the authorities about everything they see. At the bare minimum I'd fully expect them to rummage through all my files to try to find something.

Depending on how cynical your view of humanity is, it may surprise you as to how many of these people consider themselves capable. That being said, you are correct. Anyone that is truly capable will be able to perform most tasks Geek Squad can do. The only caveat being that not everybody has the necessary tools to do the job, so sometimes even the truly capable may be forced to use their service (outside of the warranty issue I mentioned earlier).
