The whole premise of H1B visas is to undercut your wages. It's pretty ridiculous the excuses the business owners use too. Like "I couldn't find employees within my price range!".

But what do I know.

Thats why we got all those highly skilled speciallists seeking refugee here in Europe.

In just 15 years about 10% could be ready for the labour market, way more effective/cheaper than giving your own people.

it's not just programming/tech, all stem fields are affected. The immigrants residency depends entirely on pleasing his boss. Either work twice the hours for half the pay, or your boss can essentially deport you. It's not fair to either side, except the immigrant doesn't mind because after several years of slave labor (practically) he can get permanent residency.

And then be replaced by a H1B. And all of a sudden vote trump. LOL. Which is what all the Hispanics did or at least a good number.

Exactly, I hate it for those guys. I think they know what they are getting into, but it really seems like the only people benefiting from this government policy like so many others is those at the top.

I'm right there with you man. I hate seeing uncreative, uninspiring, and sub-standard H1B coders EVERYWHERE in tech. And they're SO RACIST!

There is one escape: go aerospace/defense industry. The US Person requirement to handle anything ITAR related (which covers a lot of shit) means no H-1B. There are non-citizens, but they have to be permanent residents with green cards.

I'm a web developer. I have to say, as a whole, I can't stand the outsourced "development" which is taking the western world by storm right now. In order to help make ends meet or just to make some extra cash, I sometimes do side jobs on sites like freelancer.com and odesk.com. The Indian development teams honestly ruin those sites. They come in and underbid everyone by a factor of about 200%, and then deliver shitty subpar work which turns the buyer off to using the site again.

The only way I'm able to get work on those sites is because I took all of their English exams and scored 100%. Then I just come in after all the other bids are placed and place mine, along with a note asking the buyer to check my test scores and let them know that I can definitely deliver what they need without them having trouble communicating their desires.

Even then though I probably miss out on 90% of jobs on there because the Indian teams make it nearly impossible for Western developers to get work.

They hire Indian devs, they hack shit together as fast as possible, and then the buyer can't even use the product. They then have to hire a proper developer who isn't shit.

Yeah back when I was freelancing I got a ton of work that could be described as fixing some outsourced foreign crap dev.

Terrible PHP devs will keep decent developers employed for a long time to come.

The latest Joe Rogan podcast has Scott Adams (Dilbert guy). They talk about this concept where you don't have to deliver a "really good" result 100% of the time, just every so often, and you can get the other party addicted to your product. I wonder if it applies to your line of work. Just throwing it out there.

Freelancer.com and Odesk.com have combined to become Upwork.com. Just a heads up, it's a great site.

Um, how about no.

End the H1B program. Invest in American minds. Making American lives better makes America better. Fuck India with a 12 inch curry flavored dildo.

I liked Trump's original stance, which was set a minimum salary for H1B's at 100k per year, so any company that uses one really can't find a U.S. candidate.

[–] lipids 0 points 8 points (+8|-0) ago

100k is too low. That might have been the starting part for programmers of h1bs didn't exist and the stem shortage was real.

[–] jxfaith 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

I knew he mentioned that somewhere. Has he retracted that policy proposal? The Contract still states on the reverse that he will take steps to ensure that open jobs are offered to American workers first. I assume that to be code for H1b reform.

[–] JoeKerr 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

That salary needs to adjust for inflation every year. Look at inflation in 1985 and 2015. Thirty years and the value was cut in half. If the program were to be implemented in 2020 then by 2050 we would end up in the same position. This assumes the same inflation as experienced between 1985 and 2015.

Outsourced work to India makes co-working difficult due to time difference and language barrier. Outsourced Indian workers living in Silicon Valley make it too crowded, with "curry complexes" (high density apartments catering to Indians) rising up over former orchards and open space.

Before I'm labeled racist and xenophobic, I work with many Indian engineers who are bright and hard working. My concern is for the wage disparity and opportunities offered to American citizens compared to the H1B workers. There is no shortage of American engineers and developers! There IS a shortage of American citizens willing to work 80hrs/wk for slave wages.

It's fine to be racist and xenophobic. Lefties will throw the term at any one who just happens to be standing near them, much less some one with a strong political opinion.

It means nothing, ignore the label, it's the only argument they have. Embrace it and they lose their only weapon.

Trump knows limiting H1Bs and removing expired visas is the fastest way to fix middle class unemployment in Tech. All he has to do is mandate E-verify for work and it will fix half the unemployment problem and kickstart the economy. I expect a lot more blustering like this from the big corporations, they know their slave labor is about to be outlawed.

[–] watitdew 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

E-Verify is pretty easy to defraud. Source: Worked in kitchens with plenty of illegals. All the places used E-Verify.

Yeah, the stupid states giving licenses to anyone who asks doesn't help either. It will be interesting to see what he tries first, and who screams the loudest about it.

[–] SlimeJime 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

Easy to defraud? Sure. But just dish out company closing fines and jail sentences for people who abuse it and suddenly those loopholes close themselves.

[–] moneyshift 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Truth be told, I'll believe it when I see it. The H1B slave labor program should definitely be ended, but Trump is the President, and last I checked Congress writes the laws. The best we could probably hope for is that he will threaten to violate some pork program unless Congress agrees to eliminate H1B.

Ah, we're starting to see the real picture emerge from behind all the for-all-intents-and-purposes self-defeating and business-damaging PC practices.
