What can the average person do to protect themselves on the net? I already use DuckDuckGo and vpn. But I also use Chrome browser. I really need some of the extensions it offers. Sometimes I use Tor if I'm feeling paranoid. I don't do anything illegal on the net, but I always feel like someone is watching. It really fucks with me. Any tips are appreciated. :)

I hate to say, but it feels like a loosing battle. Nevertheless....
I would avoid chrome cause it is google and google is in the business of tracking. Same with Microsoft (go linux) I would use firefox, or some derivative of it, or maybe something like brave browser.
Extensions and information provided by eff.org is a really good place to start. (Privacy Badger, HTTPS) . Seriously, EFF Is one of the few well organized fighters for internet freedom.
use protonmail, tutanota, or host your own e-mail, encourage others to do so.
setup and use use an alternate e-mail address (some services provide aliases) to sign up for random shit on the internet.

Oh and if you haven't already, remove everything facebook from your life.,.. (and your electronics)

EDIT: I forgot, SIGNAL PRIVATE MESSENGER.... or some other encrypted peer to peer open source SMS messenger alternative.

Thanks. For private messaging, I've been using Pidgin. The problem is getting others to use it... I'll look into signal.
